Montana State's 19 game winning streak came to an end as Sacramento State rode hot three-point shooting and a balanced scoring attack to defeat Montana State 73-69 in front of 3,357 fans in Worthington Arena.
"Credit Sac State, they played a heck of a game and shot the ball well," said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. "It seemed like everything they were putting up was falling.
"We need to do a better job out of the gate and making those shots a little more difficult," she added. "Because once they got rolling it was hard to stop them."
Sacramento State (13-17, 6-11) connected on six-of-nine from beyond the three-point arc in the opening quarter to hold a 20-19 lead. Montana State (26-3, 16-1) got on track offensively in the second period rattling off a 15-0 run over a span of four minutes, 35-seconds to take its largest lead of the game at 38-25.
A pair of Katie Peneueta triples in the last thirty-five seconds of the half, including one from over 25-feet that banked in at the buzzer, cut the Hornets deficit to 38-31 at intermission.
After the two teams traded baskets coming out of halftime, Sacramento State went on a 13-0 run building a 48-40 advantage. MSU answered with a14-5 run of its own taking a one-point lead following a layin by freshman Addison Harris. The Hornets closed out the third quarter with four points and a 57-54 lead.
The game came down to the final 1:25 as a pair of free throws by MSU's Taylor Janssen tied the contest at 69-69. Moments later, Sacramento State's Benthe Versteeg corralled an offensive rebound and scored on the put back with 37-seconds remaining. Both teams turned the ball over on its next possessions and an Esmeralda Morales layup with seven seconds left was collected by Versteeg. Versteeg hit two free throws with four seconds remaining to secure the Hornet victory.
"They got some isolations and took advantage of it," Binford said. "We need to get better balance going about us, we're still working through the trenches of our different rotations (without Dylan and Marah) and we need to get that established."
Morales led all scorers with 23 points. The only other Bobcat to post double digits was Natalie Picton who came off the bench to record 12 points.
Peneueta and Versteeg guided Sacramento State with 19 and 17 points, respectively.
For the game, Sacramento State connected on 12-of-27 from three-point range, while the Bobcats went five-of-20. The Hornets owned a 34-28 advantage under the boards. Ella Johnson led MSU with seven rebounds.
