Five Cats score in double figures as Montana State wraps up nonconference play
BOZEMAN, Mont. – Jeremiah Davis tallied his first career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds as Montana State earned a wire-to-wire victory over Northwest, 93-54, on Monday afternoon.
The Bobcats outscored Northwest by 26 points in the first half and never looked back, using a pair of double-digit scoring runs to climb to a 39-point victory over the Eagles at Worthington Arena. 11 Bobcats scored, with five recording 10 or more points, as Montana State concluded nonconference play with its second-straight win.
"I thought the guys came out with the right attitude, the right energy to start the game," head coach Matt Logie said. "Obviously, you have a game earlier in the week where Montana Tech goes on the road and beats Montana and kind of reminds the guys that anybody can be beaten on any given night. You've got to prepare the right way, and you've got to compete the right way. What a great start it was to the game. To start up holding [Northwest] scoreless for, I think, 10 or 11 minutes, that showed their attitude and their process coming into this."
The Bobcats scored the first 21 points of the game while holding the Eagles scoreless for the opening nine minutes of play. Jed Miller tallied eight points as part of the charge, shooting a perfect 3-of-3 from the field with two threes during the run, while Christian King chipped in seven. After the Eagles put five points on the board, Montana State responded with a 7-0 run to bring its lead to 23 points, 28-5, with 6:55 left in the first half. Northwest trimmed the Bobcats' advantage to 16 points, 28-12, with a 7-0 run of its own before Montana State posted a 10-0 run heading into the final media timeout to push the lead to 38-12 with 3:44 left in the frame. The Cats maintained their 26-point lead, heading into halftime with a 46-20 advantage. King led the team in scoring with 10 points in the first half, Miller and Patrick McMahon added nine each, and Jeremiah Davis chipped in seven as the Cats shot 42.5% from the field to Northwest's 25.0%. Northwest's 20 points marked the fewest in a half by a Bobcat opponent this season.
Chris Hodges tallied eight of the Bobcats' first 11 points coming out of halftime to help the Cats build their lead to 33 points, 57-24, at the 16:09 mark. Later in the half, Hodges' free throw at the 12:02 mark sparked a 15-0 run over the next four minutes to help the Cats increase their lead to a game-high 46 points, 77-31, with 8:03 to play. Northwest's Cameron Downie tallied eight-straight points to cut the deficit to 87-49 with just under two minutes to play, but the Bobcats ultimately pulled off an impressive 93-54 win to improve to 6-7 on the season as nonconference play came to a close. The Cats shot 51.7% from the field in the second half, and all 11 active Bobcats scored in Monday's contest.
The Cats posted a 46.4% clip from the field in the contest while limiting Northwest to 31.7%. Montana State dominated the glass, outrebounding the Eagles, 54-29, to post their first game with 50 or more rebounds since grabbing 53 against Eastern Washington on Jan. 27, 2022.
Davis recorded his first career double-double and the first by a Bobcat this season, tallying 12 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Cats in both categories. McMahon and Howie Keene each matched Davis' 12 points, with McMahon recording his third-straight game in double figures and Keene posting a new career high in scoring. Steppe tallied 11 points and six rebounds, and King finished with 10 points as five Bobcats scored in double figures for the second time this season.
Montana State opens Big Sky play on Thursday, Jan. 1, continuing its three-game homestand against Northern Colorado in Worthington Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
