Four Bobcats score in double figures as MSU wins home opener over the Eagles for the third-straight year
BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Montana State men's basketball team earned its first win of the season in dominant fashion, defeating Northwest Indian College, 114-44, on Wednesday night behind 26 points by graduate transfer Davian Brown.
Brown shot a blistering 10-of-12 from the field, including 6-of-8 from three-point range, to lead a group of four Cats scoring in double figures. Montana State rewrote the record books in its home opener, tallying the third-highest field goal percentage (64.7%) and third-most three-pointers made in a game in school history (21) while matching MSU's records for fifth-highest field goal total (44), eighth-highest scoring effort (114), and ninth-most steals (15) in a game.
Montana State head coach Matt Logie was impressed by the Bobcats' unselfishness in a well-rounded performance that saw 10 different Bobcats score.
"That's what this team has been from the moment we put it together," Logie said. "We wanted guys that wanted to be a part of something and play for one another, pour into each other's relationships, and be excited for their teammates' success. And I think we've seen a lot of that, obviously, behind the curtain for the last few months, but it's showing up on game night now where they do the job that's asked. They make the easy play. They don't care who gets the credit. Obviously tonight, [Davian] gets going in the second half. Cavin [Holden] had a great first half, but we have a lot of guys that can shoot. We just want the ball to breathe and let the ball find the best shot, and these guys have done a great job of embracing that."
The Bobcats made five of their first six shots to jump out to an early 12-4 lead at the 15:36 mark in the first half. After a Northwest Indian bucket at the 14:44 mark, the Bobcats went on a 13-0 run capped off by a Waka Mbatch dunk at the 11:26 mark to grow their lead to 25-6. After some back-and-forth scoring between the Bobcats and Eagles over the next several minutes, Montana State scored 11-straight points to take a 30-point lead, 47-17, with 2:06 to play. The Bobcats made their final six shots to close the half, with Davian Brown capping off the period with a three-pointer just before the buzzer to give MSU a 54-21 advantage at the break. Brown led the Cats with 10 points in the period while Holden and Jaden Steppe chipped in nine apiece.
After shooting an impressive 61.8% (21-of-34) from the field in the first half, the Cats only got hotter in the second, making 67.6% (23-of-34) of their shots in the final 20 minutes, including 12-of-21 from three (57.1%). Brown and Jed Miller combined for 29 of the Bobcat's 60 points in the second half with Brown pouring in 16 points on 6-of-6 shooting and Miller adding 13 while making five of his seven shots.
Following a pair of misses to open the second half, the Bobcats made six-straight shots, all of which came off the hot hands of Brown and Miller, to expand their lead to 44 points, 70-26, with 15:30 to play. Steppe's layup with 9:55 remaining kickstarted a red-hot shooting run where the Bobcats made 10-of-11 shots to eclipse the 100-point mark, 105-38, with 4:49 left in the second half. Grayson Gaddis scored the first points of his collegiate career on a jumper at the 3:29 mark to cap off the Bobcats' 15-0 run and added a pair of free throws and a three-pointer to tally seven of the Bobcats' final nine points of the game. The Bobcats earned their first victory of the season by 70 points, 114-44, to improve to 1-1 on the young season.
Montana State limited Northwest Indian to just 1-of-13 (7.7%) from three-point range while outrebounding the Eagles, 41-17, in the contest. The Cats scored 32 points off of 20 turnovers and dished 24 assists to Northwest Indian's six.
Ten of the 11 Bobcats who saw game action recorded at least one point in the contest. Brown led the team with 26 while adding two rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Miller added 16 points, seven boards, and team highs in assists (5) and steals (4). Steppe knocked down 7-of-8 shots for 15 points, six rebounds, four assists, and one block, all career highs. Christian King pitched in a career-high 14 points and five boards in a well-balanced scoring effort for the Bobcats in Bozeman.
