“Simply, Memphis played better volleyball than what we did over a longer period of time,” said MSU second-year head coach Matt Houk. “They made more big plays in important situations.”
In a tightly contested match that featured 42 ties and 19 lead changes, Memphis converted more big plays than Montana State as the Tigers posted a 25-20, 23-25, 25-23, 28-26 victory over the Bobcats on the first day of the Webb-Burbridge Classic hosted by Arizona State at Desert Financial Arena in Tempe.
"Simply, Memphis played better volleyball than what we did over a longer period of time," said MSU second-year head coach Matt Houk. "They made more big plays in important situations."
Memphis (6-4) relied heavily on 6-1 sophomore outside hitter Hannah Jones, who finished with a match-high 20 kills with a .429 attack mark. The Tigers had three players in double-digit kills and outhit Montana State (1-8) .279 to .153.
"(Hannah) Jones jumps well, hits a high ball and can bring some heat," Houk stated. "We didn't execute the game plan and just weren't in the right spots."
Jordan Radick paced MSU with a season-high 12 kills, while hitting .429 and adding four blocks. Karli Heidemann came off the bench and produced a team best 13 kills, while Lauren Lindseth led the Bobcats defensively with 20 digs.
"We got some good offense out of Jordan Radick, and Karli (Heidemann) came off the bench and did a nice job, as well. Lauren Lindseth as usual had a solid match."
