‘Cats Travel to #14 Arizona State Webb-Burbridge Classic

For the third straight week the Montana State volleyball team plays three matches in three days. And for the third time this season, they will face a team ranked in the Top 30 in the AVCA/TARAFLEX Division I poll.

This weekend, the Bobcats travel to the Arizona State Webb- Burbridge Classic in Tempe. MSU opens play Thursday, Sept. 19 against Memphis at 3 p.m. (MT). The Bobcats face Prairie View A&M on Friday at 5 p.m., and No. 14 Arizona State on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Desert Financial Arena.
TWTWTW: The Bobcats went 0-3 last weekend at the University of South Dakota Classic in Vermillion. USD handed MSU a 26-28, 25-19, 25-21, 23-25, 15-10 setback on Friday night. The Cats were led by Jourdain Kamps with 17 kills, eight digs and five blocks. UTEP defeated Montana State 24-26, 25-19, 25-22, 25-20 on Saturday. The Bobcat attack was guided by Kamps with 11 kills and six blocks. On Sunday morning, Iowa State swept MSU 25-21, 25-20, 28-26 as Joelie Spelts paced the Bobcats with a career-high 13 kills.
SCOUTING REPORT: Memphis is 5-4 on the season after going 2-1 at its own Bluff City Showdown last weekend in the Larry O. Finch Center. The Tigers defeated Arkansas - Pine Bluff 3-0 and Indiana State 3-1, while Lamar handed UM its lone loss (3-0) on Friday night. Last season, Memphis posted an 11-20 overall mark and a 7-12 ledger in American Conference play. The Tigers were picked to finish ninth in the 2024 American Conference Preseason Coaches' poll. This fall, Memphis has been led by Hannah Jones, a 6-1 sophomore outside hitter from Millbrook, Ala., who 2.86 kills per set. The Tigers have five players averaging 2.00 kills per set or better. Prairie View A&M is 2-9 on the season. The Panther dropped a 3-1 decision to Lamar on Tuesday night. Prairie View was led in the match by Kylie Owens with 14 kills and 11 digs, while Kiersten Atkinson posted nine kills and a .368 attack mark. On the season, the Panthers have been led by Owens, a 5-9 junior outside hitter from Culver City, Calif., who averages 3.38 kills and 3.03 digs per set. D'Mya Hill also chips in 2.68 kills and 1.59 digs per outing. No. 14 Arizona State is 8-1 overall with its lone loss coming to then #5 Nebraska (3-0) on Sept. 13 in Lincoln. Last year, the Sun Devils went 28-7 overall and 14-6 in Pac-12 play. ASU defeated Georgia in the first round of the 2023 NCAA Volleyball Tournament, followed by a 3-0 win over BYU. The Sun Devils advanced to the regional semifinal where it dropped a 3-1 decision to Stanford. This season, Arizona State has been led by Geli Gyr, a 5-10 senior outside hitter from Flower Mound, Texas, who averaged 3.30 kills and 2.00 digs per set. The Sun Devils' Claire Jeter has also posted some jaw-dropping stats this season. The 6-3 graduate middle blocker leads the nation with a .549 attack mark. She has yet to commit a hitting error in 133 attempts this season. Defensively, Mary Shroll leads the team at 4.00 dps.
AMONG THE NATION'S ELITE: As a team the 2024 MSU ranks 28th in the nation averaging 2.67 blocks per set. The nation's top blocking program to date is Idaho State at 3.64 bps. Individually, Jourdain Kamps ranks 109th in the nation at 1.17 bps, while Jordan Radick is 125th at 1.14 bps.
