ST GEORGE, UTAH – The Montana State volleyball team's four-game winning streak came to an end on Friday night, falling short to the still-undefeated Utah Tech. The Bobcats (15-8, 8-4) could not string together enough momentum to win a set over the Trailblazers (19-3, 12-0) who continue to stand alone at the top of the Big Sky standings.
That was one of those matches where we didn't perform to a level that was deserving of a win, and they did, head coach Matt Houk said. We are disappointed, our student-athletes are disappointed and hurt, but that is part of a long season. You have some moments where things don't play out the way you want them to. The thing for our team is how do we create a good response to this moment heading into a home weekend. We can't let it define us, but have to learn and improve going forward.
The Bobcats trailed by as many as nine points in the first set, but were able to climb back to 19 before the Trailblazers reached 25. The second set was less productive, as MSU did not reach the 15-point mark.
Montana State continued to make adjustments to their rotation, with 13 Bobcats seeing the floor. The third set was the most productive for MSU, capitalizing on service errors from Utah Tech and finding the floor on offensive opportunities. Despite forcing the Trailblazers into extra points, the Bobcats fell 24-26 to end the night.
Karli Heidemann led the MSU offense with eight kills and Elli Tufto was just behind with seven. Heidemann also added 2.5 blocks and an ace. Teagan Jaynes distributed the ball for 12 assists, while Maggie Rhew and Nicolette Noble handled the rest with six each. Noble and Rhew also had 12 digs each, in Rhew's first appearance since September.
The Bobcats return to Bozeman on Nov. 5 and Nov. to host Portland State and Northern Arizona on Nov. 5 and Nov. 7. Tickets for the remainder of the 2026 season are on sale now.
