Former All-American heptathlete will coach triple jump, long jump, and multi-events
BOZEMAN, Mont. -- Olivia Lane has joined the coaching staff of the Montana State track and field program, Dale Kennedy Director of Track and Field Lyle Weese announced on Thursday.
Lane will coach the triple jump, long jump, and multi-events.
"We feel we really lucked out in the hiring process to have some great candidates, and out of those great candidates be able to hire a great coach," Weese said. "Olivia has experience in the multi's, and my feeling is that is always really beneficial to a coach to have a wide variety of both coaching experience and also competitive experience. It tends to simplify things for a coach. We feel like she has a really great background and really great temperament, and we're excited to add her to the staff."
The native of Clarkston, Washington, comes to Bozeman after two seasons as an assistant at the University of North Dakota. While in Grand Forks, Lane coached sprints, jumps, hurdles, and multi's.
Lane also coached at Ashland University in 2021-2022, where she helped the Eagles' men's team finish as the national runner-up at the 2022 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships.
"I am excited about the opportunity to be a part of the Montana State track and field program," Lane said. "I am eager to contribute to the continued success of this program. Having always had a strong connection to the state of Montana and this university, being able to join this community is truly exciting for me."
Lane was a standout heptathlete at Eastern Oregon, earning All-American honors with a 9th place finish at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in 2021 and a 12th place finish at the national meet in 2019. Lane also placed eighth in the pentathlon to earn an All-American nod at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships in 2020.
Lane obtained her bachelor's degree in communication from Eastern Oregon University in 2021 and is scheduled to receive her master's degree in communication from the University of North Dakota in 2025.
Montana State track and field is coming off one of the best seasons in program history. The Bobcat men dethroned No. 11 Northern Arizona at the 2024 Big Sky Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Bozeman for their first title since 2005, while the women placed second at both the indoor and outdoor conference meets. A program-record 23 Bobcats qualified for the NCAA West First Rounds, while 74 all-time top ten marks fell between the men and the women.
