Scarlet Weidig shoots a 70 to lead the Cats ahead of Wednesday’s final round in Goodyear, Arizona
GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Scarlet Weidig's two-under par round of 70 highlighted the second day of action from the Bobcat Desert Classic in Goodyear, Arizona, on Tuesday for the Montana State golf team.
Weidig, a redshirt junior from Belen Heredia, Costa Rica, tallied two birdies in the final three holes to record her tenth round of par-or-under this season.
"Scarlet was hitting some good numbers," head coach Brittany Basye said. "She's been working on her wedges to make sure that her number-two, the specific yardages were on. Today she was on, and she was putting—when I walked up to her on the fifth hole, she was like 'Coach, my putts are going in.' So when she says that, you can tell she's doing good. She's focused, and you can tell she's in a bit of a zone. Scarlet wants to win, so it's fun to see her back in her rhythm."
The round of 70 followed a 73 on Monday, and pushes Weidig to a tie for 16th on the individual leaderboard heading into Wednesday's final round.
The shotgun start for all 98 players on Wednesday is set for 7:30 a.m. PT/8:30 a.m. MT.
Hannah Boraas, a freshman from Alexandria, Minnesota, turned in her second straight round of 75 to finish second among the Bobcats on Tuesday.
Maddie Montoya and Lauren Greeny each finished with rounds of four-over par 76.
Montana State sits 13th heading into the final 18 holes.
"The rest of us have one more day to go out before we finalize who our five for conference are, then we have three days to practice," Basye said. "But we need to finish out this tournament on a good note—more than anything, for our confidence. We want to go out with a good taste in our mouth so when we get outside and get ready to tee it up on Monday for conference, we're not wondering what's going to happen."
Through 36 of 54 holes, Seattle U leads the field with a score of 566 (10-under par). Grand Canyon is second at 567 (9-under par), with Wyoming rounding out the top three at 569 (7-under par)
Seattle U's Rivekka Jumagulova sits atop the individual leaderboard at 11-under par.
