Bobcat Rodeo Team Looks to Ride Momentum at Miles City

BOZEMAN, Montana – Montana State looks to ride the momentum gathered at its own rodeo last weekend when the Bobcats compete at Miles Community College this weekend, July 18-21.
This weekend's Big Sky Region event follows the same format as MSU's Spring Rodeo last weekend, with one rodeo on Thursday and Friday and a second on Saturday and Sunday. At the weekend's close, nine of the region's 10 2023-24 rodeos will be in the books. Last weekend the MSU men and women each won both rodeos. Bobcats head coach Kyle Whitaker was pleased with his team's performance at home, but says translating that to different venues stands as a challenge he hopes his team meets.
"We had a great weekend (at MSU's rodeo)," he said, "but we have things to work on. We need a couple of the guys to finish the short go better, and we had a couple of girls have breakthrough weekends. Now we need them to build on those (performances)."
After a raucous weekend in Brick Breeden Fieldhouse, this weekend's venue offers different challenges. "It's a nice arena, but quite a bit smaller than ours," Whitaker said. "It probably affects the timed event (athletes) the most. You need to get a better start because if you're late it's tougher to make up time. You don't have much margin for error."
As Big Sky Region teams remain in a sprint toward the season's finish, both the men's and women's standings remain close at the top. Montana State's men (5,017.5 points) hold a slim 512 point lead over UM Western (4,505.5 points), building on an advantage that was only 42.5 points before the spring season began. The Bobcats trail MSU Northern by 33.34 points on the women's side (2408.5 points to 2375.16) after outscoring the Lights by 280 points last weekend.
Next weekend, Big Sky Region teams convene in Missoula for a single rodeo that closes the spring season.
