“I’m so proud of these kids,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “This one just hurt because of the final shot, but if you take all but one second away, this team played really, really well against the conference champions. "
Eastern Washington's Jamie Loera banked in a short jumper as time expired to give the Eagles a 52-50 win over Montana State on Saturday afternoon in Worthington Arena.
With nine minutes remaining Montana State (15-15, 9-8) rallied from a five-point deficit using a 7-0 run capped by Katelynn Limardo's offensive putback giving the Bobcats a 44-42 lead. The two teams traded leads down the stretch before Loera's three-pointer at the 2:03 mark gave Eastern Washington (25-5, 15-2) 49-46 advantage.
EWU held the lead until Madison Hall's layup tied the game at 50-all with 16 seconds left. Following an Eagle timeout, Loera waited on top as time wound down before driving left and shooting over the outstretched arms of Taylor Janssen.
"I'm so proud of these kids," said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. "This one just hurt because of the final shot, but if you take all but one second away, this team played really, really well against the conference champions.
"Our energy was fantastic, our bench was fantastic, our seniors were fantastic, our fans were fantastic," Binford added. "The win/loss column doesn't show all of the good things we accomplished today."
Montana State trailed 29-25 at halftime and came out of intermission with six unanswered points. Hall's two free throws gave MSU a 31-29 lead at the 6:34 mark of the third quarter. Neither team would get more than a five-point advantage the rest of the game.
The Bobcats defense held Eastern Washington to a season low point production and limited the Eagles to 36.8% from the field, including a four-of-15 effort from beyond the arc. EWU entered the game shooting 41.3% from the floor.
MSU won the battle of the boards, outrebounding EWU 40-36. Janssen paced the Bobcats with eight rebounds, while Hall and Ella Johnson added six.
"After the first quarter I felt that we cleaned up a few things and settled in," Binford said. "We kept them under 14 points a quarter after that. Coming out of halftime we talked about our third quarters not being great and we challenged them at the first media (timeout) to have it as a tied game and we didn't even get to the first media, and we already had a lead.
"This team really came out hard to play for their seniors," she added.
Limardo paced MSU with a team-high 13 points, while adding three steals. Marah Dykstra was also in double digits with 12 points.
Loera led all players with 15 points and eight rebounds.
