Albrecht, a product of Stillwater, Minn., opened her World Cup experience on Friday morning, finishing 40th overall in the 15km Mass Start Freestyle with a time of 45:28.1.
Montana State Nordic standout Emma Albrecht will take a quick break from RMISA action to compete in four races at FIS COOP Cross Country World Cup at the Canmore Nordic Centre in Canmore, Alberta this weekend.
Albrecht, a product of Stillwater, Minn., opened her World Cup experience on Friday morning, finishing 40th overall in the 15km Mass Start Freestyle with a time of 45:28.1.
The United States' Jessie Diggins captured the Gold medal in a time of 40:26.0, while Delphine Claudel of France took silver in 40:28.6, and Norway's Heidi Weng, bronze, 40:29.3.
On Saturday, Albrecht skis the skate sprint, followed by Sunday's 20km Class Mass Start, and Tuesday's classic sprint.
"At the start of the season we discussed qualifying for the North American World Cups as a 'stretch goal' for Emma, something that would be hard to achieve, but not impossible," said MSU Nordic head coach Adam St. Pierre. "Based on Emma's improvements last year, and her great training in the summer and fall, we thought she had a shot.
"I am so proud of her for achieving this goal," he added. "It will be a great learning experience for her, to get to ski with and race against the best skiers in the World- including multi-time Olympic medalist and current #1 skier in the World for the U.S. Ski Team Jessie Diggins."
Most World Cup races are held in Europe, primarily Scandinavia. Every few years the World Cup circuit comes to North America. Typically, each nation gets to start 4-6 athletes per race, depending on the nation's world ranking. When hosting, the host nation gets to start 12. Since the World Cup comes infrequently to North America- both the U.S. and Canada get to send 12 athletes. After Canmore, the World Cup will move to Minneapolis, Minn., for another weekend of competition before it returns to Europe for the end of the season.
Albrecht qualified for the U.S. team based on strong results at the mid-December SuperTour races held in Anchorage, Alaska and strong results at the early January National Championship races at Soldier Hollow in Utah.
"One of our goals for the MSU ski program is to develop athletes so that they have the opportunity to ski beyond college," St. Pierre said. "Emma earning her first World Cup starts is a big step for her in her pursuit of a post-collegiate ski career."
