“We played a much better second half and played more team basketball,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “I thought we were pressing in the first half and super reactive to the changing defenses and physicality.”
Fifth-year standout Katelynn Martin and true freshman Taylee Chirrick each recorded double-doubles as Montana State benefitted from a strong third quarter cruising to a 75-38 win over Puerto Rico-Mayaguez at the Clasico Puerto Rico on Friday morning at Coliseo Rubén Rodríguez.
Leading 36-24 at halftime, Montana State (10-2) went on a 17-0 run over the course of five minutes and closed out the third period with a commanding 60-31 advantage.
"We played a much better second half and played more team basketball," said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. "I thought we were pressing in the first half and super reactive to the changing defenses and physicality."
Chirrick, a product of Roberts, recorded 13 points, 11 rebounds and five steals, while Martin added 12 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Marah Dykstra led all Bobcats with 15 points. All thirteen players on the active roster saw six minutes of action or more.
"I felt our bench was very steady and consistent, and they gave us great minutes in the second half," Binford said. "Taylee was an animal, KJ (Martin) was an animal on the glass, Addison (Harris) had great minutes, Hannah (Robbins) gave us great minutes, and on-and on.
"The big take away from this weekend is we were able to get good minutes from everyone," Binford added. "The challenge now is how we maximize the depth that we have and how we get everyone in the flow, to make this work."
The Bobcat defense limited UPRM (0-8) to just 14 points in the second half. MSU held a sizeable 46-14 advantage under the glass and owned a 27-2 cushion in second chance points. Montana State dished out 17 assists and had 17 steals but committed twenty turnovers.
"We need to take better care of the ball," Binford stated. "Usually, that's an area where we get extra possessions. We were not very sharp with the ball- passing, cutting at the right times, or spacing at times and that puts you in unpredictable situations. We need to get that cleaned up."
MSU finishes its non-conference schedule 10-2 overall, tops in the Big Sky Conference.
"Our non-conference was a very solid beginning, but we still have a lot to grow on, particularly on the offensive end," Binford said. "We're excited for what we could do in the next three months."
