The Bobcat win was its third straight over the Grizzlies, ensuring the Main Line Trophy’s home in Bozeman for another month.
Montana State used a strong block, scrappy defense, and an efficient offensive attack to dominate Montana 25-19, 25-16, 25-23 on Friday night in front of 1,974 fans in Dahlberg Arena.
The Bobcat win was its third straight over the Grizzlies, ensuring the Main Line Trophy's home in Bozeman for another month. The two rivals meet again on Nov. 22 in the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse.
Montana State (7-13, 5-4) outhit Montana (6-14, 1-8) .203 to .089, while holding advantages in service aces and blocks.
"I thought we put a lot of pressure on them with our serve," said MSU head coach Matt Houk. "We were able to hit some spots and get them on their heels. I felt we upgraded our block, and we did a nice job seeing the ball and getting our hands to the right spot."
The Bobcats took a 15-10 lead at the media timeout in the opening set, before UM responded to tie the contest at 18-all. MSU answered with a 7-1 run closing out the frame on a kill by Jourdain Kamps. Kamps had five kills in the first set.
"Jourdain played a clean match," Houk said. "She was very consistent and played with no pressure. She hit the spots she needed."
A Kamps and Joelie Spelts block in the second set gave MSU an 18-12 cushion and the Bobcats rolled to the win following a Camryn Greenwald kill.
The Bobcats held its momentum in the final stanza taking a 15-11 lead at the midway mark. UM fought back and evened the contest at 19-all on a kill by Maddie Kramer. MSU quickly responded going up 23-20 on a Kamps kill. The Grizzlies made one final push with three straight points, but a block by MSU's Courtney Weather followed by a Madilyn Siebler kill gave the Bobcats the sweep.
"We had a very disciplined, focused week of practice," Houk said. "It was player-driven, and I really believe that is a key element as we go down the stretch. This was a great response to last weekend's play."
Montana State has won three of five on the road in Big Sky Conference play.
Kamps finished with a team-high 11 kills, while hitting .370 and adding a match-high eight blocks. Greenwald and Siebler added seven kills apiece. Defensively, libero Lauren Lindseth registered 22 digs, while Weatherby added ten. Siebler and Jorda Radick notched four blocks, as well.
The Bobcat defense held UM's top hitter Paige Clark to just four kills and a -.182 attack mark. "We were able to get her in some spots early on and I think that set the tone."
Montana State hosts Weber State next Thursday, Oct. 31 in Shroyer Gym.
