Montana State had its second-best shooting game of the season and outrebounded Portland State 33-23 en route to a 71-50 win over the Vikings in front of 2,361 fans in Worthington Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Montana State (11-10, 5-3) shot 60% from the field in the first half to build a 36-25 advantage at intermission. MSU led by as much as 20-points in the second quarter as sophomore Marah Dykstra sparked the Bobcats with 10 points.
Portland State (5-15, 0-8) closed to within nine points with 6 minutes, 51 seconds left in the third quarter but would get no closer as MSU built a 22-point advantage in the waning minutes on a Natalie Picton three-pointer.
"We had two challenges for the team," said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. "We needed to get extra possessions on forcing errors, and we needed to win the rebounding battle. We haven't been rebounding too particularly well, and our kids responded under the glass. Our kids are starting to take those things to heart."
Dykstra matched a career-high 17 points connecting on five-of-ten from the field and seven-of-nine from the free throw line. She also added five rebounds and a game-best five assists. Also in double figures for the Bobcats were Taylor Jannsen 14, and Madison Hall 13.
MSU owned a 48-8 advantage in points scored in the paint.

Johnson, a freshman pulled off a redshirt season in December due to numerous Bobcat injuries, chipped in eight points, eight rebounds, three steals and two assists in 26 minutes of action. Starting point guard Natalie Picton ended with nine points, four steals and two assists.
MSU finished the game shooting 50.8% from the floor, its second best of the season behind its 51.8% output in a win over New Mexico on Nov. 23.
Esmeralda Morales led the Vikings with 19 points, including four 3-pointers.
MSU plays at Eastern Washington on Thursday night.
