“I’m proud of our kids for battling and fighting hard,” Binford said.
Northern Arizona scored 52 points in the opening half shooting 54.8% from the field en route to an 88-73 win over Montana State on Thursday night at Findlay Toyota Court.
Northern Arizona's (10-5, 2-0) Emily Rodabaugh poured in a game-high 23 points, including a seven-of-ten effort from long distance to lead four Lumberjacks in double figures.
"We didn't dictate, and we didn't disrupt," said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. "And we gave (Emily) Rodabaugh too many open looks and she knocked them down and then they blew us away with the three-ball."
Montana State (8-8, 2-1) trailed 52-35 at intermission. The Bobcats shot 50% percent from the field in the first half but couldn't overcome NAU who connected on eight-of-12 three-pointers and 10-of-12 from the line.
The Bobcats won the second half 38-36 largely behind the play of its freshmen corps. MSU was without the services of five players due to injury.
"I'm proud of our kids for battling and fighting hard," Binford said. "Our bench gave us great minutes. I can go right down the line and find positives in everyone's play. We have a lot of kids learning different positions and play calls, and they continue to gain valuable experience.
"In the end, it just wasn't our best defensive effort," she added.
Four Bobcats reached double digits led by Madison Hall with 14 points on six-of-11 from the field. Also hitting double figures were Taylor Janssen 13, Natalie Picton 13, and Issy Bunyan 12. Freshman Brooke Berry received her first start and registered nine points and five rebounds.
Katelynn Limardo led MSU under the glass with a team-best seven rebounds.
Montana State plays at Northern Colorado on Sunday at 2 p.m., in Greeley.
