Four Bobcats finish below par in opening round, setting up duel with Sacramento State in tournament finale on Tuesday morning
SARATOGA SPRINGS, Utah – Behind jaw-dropping scores from multiple Bobcats, the Montana State women's golf team turned in the best performance in program history over the first 18 holes on Monday, dominating the first two rounds at the Big Sky '54 for IX' tournament at TalonsCove Golf Club in Saratoga Springs, Utah.
In their first round since shattering the program record for low round on the final day of the Timpanogos Collegiate Classic two weeks ago in Provo by shooting a 278 (-10), the Bobcats went out and broke their own record with an incredible 276 (-12).
Four Bobcats finished below par in the opening round, a program-record, with Scarlet Weidig (67), Lauren Greeny (69), Eva Heinz (70), and Maddie Montoya (70) all turning in stellar scorecards.
Those top four for head coach Brittany Basye collected 18 birdies in the first round to just six bogeys and zero double-bogeys.
"Obviously a great first round," Basye said. "Getting the four-under par was huge for a first round. We got tired the second round and shots got offline some. Scarlet and Maddie under par is awesome, they played hard all day."
Complete results from the first two rounds can be viewed here.
Weidig's five-under 67 tied MSU's individual low-round record two weeks after Greeny shot a 67 in the season-opener tournament. The veteran recorded five birdies and no bogeys en route to the best 18 holes of her collegiate career.
The native of Belen Heredia, Costa Rica, then followed up her record-tying first round with a three-under 69 second round, and currently sits in first atop the individual leaderboard at (-8), one stroke ahead of Northern Arizona's Amy Hodgkins (-7).
Montoya caught fire on the back-nine of the first round, at one point tallying birdies on three out of four opportunities from the 13th to the 16th holes. The sophomore then shot a one-under 71 in the second round and sits tied for fourth place on the individual leaderboard with a (-3).
After 36 holes, Greeny and Heinz are t-25th at (+3) and Jordan Briggs is t-66th (+11). Competing as individuals, Belle Brezovski shot (+7) and Hannah Boraas shot (+9).
"All seven of these players can play golf, they each contribute in their own ways," Basye said. "We still have work to do and need to be ready to play hard for 18 holes tomorrow."
Heading into Tuesday's final 18-hole round, MSU sits in second place at (-5) after rounds of 276 and 295, three strokes behind defending Big Sky champion Sacramento State (-8) and six strokes ahead of third-place Northern Arizona (+1)
Southern Utah (+6) is slotted fourth while Eastern Washington and Weber State (+11) are tied for fifth through 36 holes of action at the biggest tournament of the fall season.
The third and final round of the Big Sky '54 for IX' tournament begins with a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m. MT. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.
