Tayla Moeykens leads the way for Montana State in Cody, Wyoming
full results from last weekend
BOZEMAN, Montana – Montana State opened the 2023-24 Big Sky Region college rodeo season in strong fashion last weekend by winning three of four events in Cody, Wyoming. The Bobcat men won both rodeos at the event hosted by Northwest College, while MSU's women won the second one-head event.
In Friday's rodeo, freshman Cole Gerhardt took all-around honors and finished second in the bareback. Kaden Conway won the steer wrestling, with teammates Traver Johnson, Dylan Frimodt and Wes Shaw holding down the next three spots. Jaden Whitman took second in the all-around in the second rodeo with Gerhardt finishing second.
"I was really impressed with some of our new men's competitors," said Bobcat coach Kyle Whitaker. "We got off to a really good start, winning both rodeos."
On the women's side, Tayla Moeykens took all-around honors for the second event and won the barrel racing in both rodeos. Moeykens also captured the breakaway roping in the Saturday's rodeo, when Breyer Newman won the goat tying. MSU finished second in the team standings in the first rodeo (268.50 points to 563.50 MSU Northern's 563.50) but bounced back to score 466.66 points in the second rodeo, topping Miles CC (233.0).
"Tayla was awesome," Whitaker said. "She really competed well. We'll need several returners to step into more important roles this year and last weekend it looked like that's happening."
The Bobcats' next competition is two rodeos September 21-24 at MSU Northern.
