Bobcats Shine in First Performance of 2023 MSU Spring Rodeo

First rodeo of spring season brings out the best in several Bobcats
BOZEMAN, Montana – Montana State freshman Macardi Anderson mounted her horse Shortbus and settled into the runway leading into Worthington Arena before her run in Thursday night's barrel racing run in the MSU Spring Rodeo.
And then it happened.
"I black out," she said with a laugh. "When you're in the chute coming up the alley all you can see is the third barrel, you can't see the first two, so that's all you really focus on. But then I heard the crowd a little bit, and that was really exciting."
In her first live action as a Bobcat in the MSU Spring Rodeo the Gooding, Idaho product posted one of Montana State's top performances of the evening, logging a 15.40 to tie for first in the barrel racing. The top 10 marks in each event after Thursday night's performance and Friday's daytime slack session advance to the first rodeo's short go-round, which begins at 7 pm on Friday in Montana State's Brick Breeden Fieldhouse.
"Macardi's a cool girl to have on the team and I was happy to see her do good like that," Whitaker said. "I could tell she was pumped up, and I thought there was an awesome crowd here tonight. It was probably louder than Saturday was last year. She handled that good. She's a good, talented young cowgirl."
Bobcat head coach Kyle Whitaker was pleased with his team's effort. "I was pretty happy," he said, "I thought we did real good. There's always some nerves the first rodeo back (after winter break) and it's hard to get back in the rhythm of things. I thought we jumped right into it and looked pretty good in almost every event."
Several Bobcats joined Anderson in recording solid marks, led by Jessica Stevens' 6.8 that puts her in the lead of the goat tying. "Jessica grew up in Creighton, Nebraska, about an hour from where I grew up," Whitaker said, "and she competed against my daughter in junior high rodeos so I've been watching her for years. She's a super athlete. I'm glad she's here on our team and was glad to see her perform so well tonight."
Nathan Eggena, a senior, posted an 8.9 in the steer wrestling. It was the third-best mark of the night, but it was much more important than that personally. "Nathan just joined the team this winter, and he'd never caught a steer before tonight," Whitaker said. "We'd been practicing but he's never caught one. He's going to make the championship round (Friday) night."
Eggena's teammate Mike Nannini enters Friday in the steer wrestling lead, posting a 4.2. A pair of Bobcats stand atop the saddle bronc competition. Caleb Meeks marked a 67, while Cody Faulkner scored 53. Meghan McGinley's 3.2 was the top breakaway roping time.
