Montana State looks to ride momentum from its school-record-setting low team score and single-round team scores set at the GCU Invitational last week.
BOZEMAN, Mont. — Coming off a school-record-breaking team showing at the GCU Invitational, the Montana State women's golf team will head to Hawai'i for the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational from March 6-7.
The 54-hole tournament will be held at the par-72, 6,123-yard Hoakalei Country Club course, located in 'Ewa Beach, O'ahu. The first two rounds will be played on Monday, starting at 11 a.m. MT, while the final round begins Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. MT. Live results will be provided by Golfstat; a link will be provided on the women's golf team's schedule page at msubobcats.com.
Montana State will compete against 10 teams — most of which the team doesn't usually see during the regular season. Defending team champion Sacramento State is the only other Big Sky Conference school in attendance. Host team Hawai'i aside, Georgetown, Long Beach State, Middle Tennessee State, UNC Wilmington, Osaka-Gakuin (of Japan), Division II Rollins, Towson and Western Michigan round out the field.
"The teams competing at this tournament are also teams we don't normally compete against so that will be good to see how we stack up against them," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "We have an opportunity at each tournament to keep working on the special shots that we don't get to work on inside. Each player has a few things they are working on. As a team, we continue to focus on course management and mental strength during competition."
Reigning Big Sky Women's Golfer of the Week Scarlet Weidig Velazquez, Maddie Morgan, Kameryn Basye, Lauren Greeny and Jordan Briggs will compete for MSU in Hawai'i. That group is coming off a historic showing at the GCU Invitational, at which they set the school record with a 54-hole tournament team score of 882 strokes — bolstered by a team-record 287 on the final round.
Individually, Weidig Velazquez eagled on the final hole to force a three-way playoff for first place; she wound up tying for second with an 8-under 208 (69-71-68) that also tied the school record for the best three-round score in program history. The sophomore would earn her third Big Sky Women's Golfer of the Week honor of her career for her efforts.
The first two rounds of the University of Hawai'i's Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational, held at the Hoakalei Country Club in 'Ewa Beach, HI (O'ahu) begin Monday, March 6 at 11 a.m. MT/8 a.m. HST. Links to live results and tournament information will be uploaded to the women's golf team's schedule page on msubobcats.com.
