MSU sits in eighth place entering Tuesday's final round at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational at Tacoma Country and Golf Club in Lakewood, Washington
LAKEWOOD, Washington – The Montana State women's golf team battled through tough weather in completing 36 holes on Monday at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational, sitting in eighth place among the talented 22-team field at Tacoma Country and Golf Club in Lakewood, Washington.
The Bobcats, coming off back-to-back record-breaking tournament performances in their last two outings, kept their foot on the gas with the same strong form through the first round in wet and rainy conditions outside Seattle, shooting a 1-under-par 277 to lead a stacked tournament field by five strokes.
However, as conditions worsened, the Bobcats found a tougher time in the second round, shooting a 308 to enter Tuesday's 18-hole final round still in the top third of the field and within striking distance of the top group.
Scarlet Weidig sits in a tie for fourth in the field of 119 players, carding a 36-hole score of 143 (73-70), two strokes behind the two leaders: Wyoming's Morgan Ryan and Nevada's Gabby Kano (-3).
Weidig, a redshirt junior from Belen Heredia, Costa Rica, is coming off the fourth tournament win of her career and Big Sky Golfer of the Week honors.
"Weather was horrible with it raining all day, so being that we were out there 11 hours, it was rough," head coach Brittany Basye said. "Our round one was really good for the conditions. We had all players the first round, and the second round Scarlet showed up. She's putting herself in a position to win again. We need all six to show up tomorrow and give it their all."
Full results from the first two rounds in Monday's action can be viewed here.
A pair of freshmen led the way in the early going, with Eva Heinz carding a 3-under 69 to pace her teammates, and Hannah Boraas scoring an even-par 72 that included a stretch of four birdies in five holes on the front-nine in her first collegiate appearance in the starting lineup.
Maddie Montoya kept up her consistent, steady play, shooting a 1-over 73 to mark her sixth consecutive round below 75 to begin the fall.
However, in a slow, rain-soaked second round in the afternoon, Scarlet Weidig powered through with a tremendous 2-under 70,while the Bobcats found little traction elsewhere.
Through 36 holes, Nevada leads the tournament (580, +4) with Santa Clara (582, +6) and UC Irvine (584, +8) rounding out the top three.
In eighth place, MSU sits in front of Gonzaga, UC Riverside, Seattle U, and Big Sky foes including Idaho, Portland State, and Eastern Washington.
The Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational wraps up Tuesday with one final 18-hole round. The shotgun start is scheduled for 8 a.m. PT/9 a.m. MT. Live scoring is available on Birdiefire.
