The Montana State cross country program gets its opportunity to participate in a conference meet this Saturday when the Bobcats take part in the Big Sky Winter Cross Country Championships
BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Montana State cross country program gets its opportunity to participate in a conference meet this Saturday when the Bobcats take part in the Big Sky Winter Cross Country Championships. The championships are slated to begin at 1 p.m. at Riverside Golf Course in Riverdale, Utah.
The last time the Bobcats ran at the Big Sky Cross Country Championships in November of 2019, the MSU men earned their highest finish at the meet in seven years. The 'Cats finished third in the team standings with 74 which was the lowest total for the squad since the 2010 championships. The Bobcats were also boosted by three all-conference performers.
This weekend's meet will feature multiple high-performing teams that compete among the best at the national level. The 'Cats will look to run at a similar level that they ran at during the fall in their lone meet when they had the top five finishers in a head-to-head dual race versus Idaho in late October.
"It was difficult coming back from break, it was longer than usual, but we're starting to gain some momentum now," said Lyle Weese, Montana State's director of cross country. We're excited for what our men's team can do. We had a really great fall of training, and once we were able to get back here and get back into the rhythm of it, we've started to run well again.
"There's some really good teams in our conference like NAU, Southern Utah and Weber State, who have been ranked throughout the year, so it'll definitely be a challenge for our men's team."
MSU's women's squad hopes to also use its lone meet this fall as a stepping stone to their appearance at the Big Sky Championships this Saturday. Four of the top six finishers in the dual versus Idaho were Bobcats led by returning All-American Camila Noe.
The Bobcats were picked to finish fifth in the Big Sky Cross Country Coaches' Preseason Poll, the same position they placed as a team at the 2019 conference championship.
"We are really excited about the women's team. They had such a good meet this fall at Idaho, so that was really encouraging. Similar to the men's team, they were a little out of rhythm when we got back from break, but they've really started to come together. They're really looking forward to seeing what they can do at the Big Sky meet."
The Big Sky Conference meet will serve as the conclusion of the season for cross country runners not selected to participate in the NCAA Championships. The NCAA meet is slated to take place in Stillwater, Oklahoma, on March 15. Latest information about the Big Sky Winter Cross Country Championships can be found on their championship central page.
