BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Montana State track and field and cross country program is preparing to compete over the next two weeks.

MSU's 'Bobcat Bonus' meet this Friday will be the final competition for its track and field athletes during the indoor season. The Bobcats welcome athletes from Idaho as the two programs will participate in their final action across a variety of disciplines until the outdoor season.
"We are just really fortunate to be able to compete," said Lyle Weese, Montana State's director of track and field and cross country. 'We're utilizing every opportunity that we have. We'll have some high-level performers coming in here from Idaho in the jumps, sprints and in the throws. It'll be exciting for our student-athletes to compete against a different opponent in Idaho.
"This should really catapult us into our outdoor season, getting another chance to compete. We'll take a little break here from competition and then get fired up pretty soon again for the outdoor season."
Fans will not be able to attend MSU's Friday's meet in order to minimize risk to fans and athletes alike. Live results for the duals will be available at msubobcats.com/trackresults. A stream of the meet will be available on the Montana State Athletics YouTube page. A schedule of events is online at msubobcats.com.
The Bobcats' distance runners turn their attention to the Big Sky's cross country championships. Normally held in late October or early November, this season's championship will provide a different challenge to MSU's men's and women's teams compared to past seasons. The Bobcat men took third in the Big Sky meet last held in November of 2019 while the MSU women's squad finished fifth.
"It is such an unusual situation where it's in the middle of February," Weese said. "We've been doing a lot of track races, we've been doing quite a bit of our workouts on the indoor track, but we've still been out in the weather a bit to get use to the outdoor conditions doing some challenging workouts.
"We are just fortunate to have a conference championship and we're excited to go up against the great cross country teams in the Big Sky Conference."
The Big Sky Conference meet will serve as the conclusion of the season for cross country runners not selected to participate in the NCAA Championships. The NCAA meet is slated to take place in Stillwater, Oklahoma, on March 15.
