BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Montana State men's basketball team completed its final matchup of its exhibition slate on Wednesday, Nov. 3, in Worthington Arena with a 116-42 victory over Yellowstone Christian.
The contest got off to a slow start for the Bobcats as the Centurions kept pace for the first eight minutes. A Doug Merida 3-pointer for Yellowstone Christian cut the deficit to 14-11 at the 11:19 mark of the first half, but from there it was all Bobcats.
MSU outscored Yellowstone Christian 43-9 to finish out the first half. The Bobcats eventually scored 37 more points than the Centurions in each half en route to the win.
"I know we can't have that next week when we open at Colorado," Montana State head coach Danny Sprinkle said. "We can't have those lapses. We've got to come out focused and I didn't feel like they were. I don't know if it was because of the opponent or what the deal was, but that's not an excuse.
"Our whole deal is competing against your own habits. You've got to get better habits and we'll have to improve on that over the next five days."
A variety of Bobcats scored in the matchup with seven scoring in double digits. Patrick McMahon led the way with 17 points and he was followed by Abdul Mohamed (14) and RaeQuan Battle (13). Mohamed also had a team-high eight rebounds and six assists.
MSU went 47-for-77 (61%) from the field while holding Yellowstone Christian to a 22.7% clip overall. The Centurions were just 4 of 28 (14.3%) from long range. Battle, Tyler Patterson and Isaac Spears each connected on multiple 3-pointers.
"We had some good looks and finally Tyler knocked a couple down and that kind of broke it open," Sprinkle said. "It came down to moving the basketball and taking the right shot. Even some of the shots we missed (tonight) were good shots."
The Bobcats officially open the 2021-22 season on Tuesday, Nov. 9, when MSU travels to Boulder to face Colorado in the CU Events Center at 8 p.m. MT. The game will air on Pac-12 Networks and the Bobcat Radio Network.
