TULSA, Okla. – The Montana State women's tennis team dropped a hard-fought 4-3 decision to Louisiana Tech on Sunday afternoon to complete play at the Hurricane Invitational at the Case Tennis Center. Host Tulsa defeated the Bobcats earlier in the morning 7-0.
Louisiana Tech took an early 1-0 lead capturing the opening doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles. MSU's top tandem of Laura Mary and Linnea Fristam posted a 6-2 victory over Nadja Manjon and Andrea Perez-Lopez for the Bobcats lone win.
MSU then took the top three singles matches as Mary, Fristam and Mirte Van Baelen all recorded straight set victories at Nos. 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Fristam and Van Baelen both won first set tiebreakers to lift the Bobcats to a 3-1 advantage. Tech answered taking the bottom three matches on the ladder to earn the win.
"I'm proud of players and there's a lot they can take away from competing against four good teams," said MSU head coach Jon Reeves. "We had our opportunities against Louisiana Tech in doubles but couldn't secure the point. Singles started with wins at the top three spots. We competed well in our first wave of singles. Our second wave gave us opportunities to close out the overall match. Caitlin Ward played her best set of the year to force a third set and JJ Chen fought back in the second set to put the pressure on her opponent."
MSU faced two ranked opponents against Tulsa. The Hurricane were paced by 52nd-ranked Martina Okalova at No. 1 singles and the tandem of 40th-ranked Okalova and partner Vera Ploner at No. 1 doubles. Tulsa won the contest sweeping all matches in straight sets.
"Against Tulsa, our ladies were doing the right things," Reeves said. "Tulsa is simply a good team. They don't give you anything, and they can step up and take it too you. Our girls did their best to step up their level of play and take chances."
