MSU looks to build momentum after big road win
BOZEMAN, Montana – You can't blame Brian Fish if he doesn't know the day or the week or the town he wakes up in, but you can bet he knows how difficult the task at hand if for his Montana State men's basketball team.
The Bobcats play their third game in six days on Thursday, hosting a resurgent Eastern Washington team that is among the hottest teams in the Big Sky. The Eagles (8-13 overall, 6-4 Big Sky) stand a half-game ahead of Montana State (9-12 overall, 6-5 Big Sky) in the league standings, with a game-in-hand on MSU after an 85-81 EWU win in Spokane last month. Thursday's winner stakes its claim to fourth place in the Big Sky for the time being.
After searching for consistency amidst the loss of all-time great Bogdan Bliznyuk and a rash of pre-Christmas injuries, Eastern has found its footing since conference play began. Emerging star Jacob Davison reeled in Big Sky Player of the Week honors for his high-scoring exploits last week and averages 18.2 points per league game. Forward Mason Peatling is a force inside, averaging 17.4 points and 7.3 boards per league outing, while Jesse Hunt's 9.2 boards a game allows the Eagles to out-rebound their opponents by nearly a rebound per league game.
Montana State enters Thursday's game fresh off a big road win Monday, when the Cats beat Northern Colorado 69-66. The Cats held UNC to 42% shooting, Montana State's best defensive game since the league opener at Southern Utah. Tyler Hall continues to pace MSU offensively, scoring at least 20 points in seven straight games.
After Thursday's game, the Cats play their fourth game in eight days on Saturday at 2 pm when Idaho comes to the Fieldhouse.
