A rough third quarter ultimately doomed the Bobcats in its road opener as South Dakota State handed MSU a 60-50 setback on Thursday night in Frost Arena.
BROOKINGS, S.D. – Montana State got of the gate quickly as Fallyn Freije scored the first five points, but a rough third quarter ultimately doomed the Bobcats in its road opener as South Dakota State handed MSU a 60-50 setback on Thursday night in Frost Arena.
Leading 7-0 after Freije's third basket, Montana State (3-1) gave up a 14-3 run to South Dakota State (2-2) to close out the opening frame. The Jackrabbits pushed its lead to 27-22 at intermission.
The third quarter, which has been MSU's nemesis so far this season, proved fatal once again as the Bobcats shot 15.4% from the field, while SDSU hit at a 56.3% clip to pull away from Montana State building a 51-29 advantage heading into the final period.
Montana State fought back in the final 10-minutes out-scoring the Jackrabbits 21-9 as seven different Bobcats scored, led by freshman Darian White with seven.
"I was really proud of the fight in the fourth quarter," said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. "However, I thought we were really impatient from start to finish. We forced a ton and took shots in the first 10-seconds of the shot clock. Top teams like South Dakota State will take away your primary action and we need to be able to work second and third sides. The third quarter was detrimental, and the way we start the second half is something we need to address."
Freije paced the Bobcats with a team-high 11 points, while Oliana Squires hit for ten, including a pair of 3-pointers. Squires also added a game-high three steals and pulled down three rebounds.
SDSU finished the game shooting 38.5% percent, while holding MSU to 28.1%. The Bobcats also connected on just three-of-16 from long distance.
The Jackrabbits held a 44-40 advantage on the glass. Montana State was guided under the boards by White 7, Freije six, and Kola Bad Bear and Martha Kuderer with five, apiece.
South Dakota State was led by Paiton Burckhard with 15 points, while Tagyn Larson added 14.
MSU will play at the University of Minnesota on Saturday at 1 p.m. (MT).
