Bobcats Ready to Race at Big Sky Cross Country Championships

“This meet is a focus for both of our teams and we are really excited for the opportunity to compete at the Big Sky Conference Championships. I think we’re getting healthier, getting our energy levels up and getting excited to race at a championship meet.”
The Montana State cross country teams travel to Greeley, Colo., to compete at the Big Sky Championships which begin at 11:30 a.m. at the Boomerang Golf Course. The Bobcats have participated in four meets to prepare for the conference tilt hosted by Northern Colorado.
"This meet is a focus for both of our teams and we are really excited for the opportunity to compete at the Big Sky Conference Championships," said Lyle Weese, Montana State's director of cross country. "I think we're getting healthier, getting our energy levels up and getting excited to race at a championship meet."
Montana State's men's and women's teams were both selected to finish fourth by the Big Sky's head coaches in the preseason poll. Currently in the rankings, the MSU men are listed in the fourth highest spot in the USTFCCA regional rankings among conference members by sitting 12th in the Mountain Region.
The Bobcat men have been boosted by a strong season so far by junior Collin Buck. He's been MSU's top finisher in all three races he's appeared in, most recently finishing 25th overall at the Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind.
The Bobcats have received contributions from several individuals throughout the season. Nine runners have finished among MSU's top seven lineup this year. Out of those nine runners, seven have previous experience competing at the Big Sky meet.
"We have been fortunate to have Collin run really well in his three races this year," Weese said. "We've had other guys do well in the past. Ty Mogan made it to the NCAA Championships last year and Duncan Hamilton won the Big Sky steeplechase championship as a freshman.
"We have quite a few young guys and experienced guys that round out the team. I think the big key for our team's success is for our top three to compete really well against the top three of the other teams. We're shooting for a few from our pack to have breakthroughs and have a great race this weekend."
MSU's women's squad has been paced by freshman Camila Noe during the 2019 season. Noe has been the Bobcats' top finisher in all three races she's run in, taking 24th recently at Pre-Nationals. Her marks this season give her an opportunity to battle for the women's individual title.
"Camila is a great racer," Weese said. "Throughout her high school career, she was really good in championship races like this. I anticipate she'll have a really solid race and be in contention for the individual championship."
The Bobcats have been led by a core group of runners. Trisha Carlson, Anna French, Madison Liechty and Gillian Maness have helped make up MSU's scoring lineup since the MSU Cross Country Classic was held at Bridger Creek Golf Course on Sept. 21. They'll hope to build off of their most recent runs to move up the Big Sky standings on Saturday.
"Our women's team had a really good race at the Paul Short Run and then at Pre-Nationals we didn't have as quite as good of a race," Weese said. "We've talked as a team about what we can do to have one of those good races again. We're excited to try to do that again and put it all together."
The Big Sky Championships open with the start of the Women's 5-kilometer Championship Race at 11:30 a.m. The Men's 8K Championship Race follows at 12:30 p.m. Head to the Big Sky Championship Central page for more information about Saturday's meet.
