Frey’s Career Night and Hustle Plays Key Bobcat Win

With 7 minutes and 36 seconds left in the game Saturday, Harald Frey pulled up from well outside the 3-point line and nailed his sixth 3-pointer of the day. Everyone in Worthington Arena knew the shot was going in. It capped off an 11-4 personal run for Frey, extending a Bobcat lead to double digits for good.
During the last three games, Bobcat point guard Harald Frey wasn't shooting the ball the way he normally does. The junior, coming off a 4-17 shooting performance Thursday night against Weber State, responded on Saturday against Idaho State in the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse.
With 7 minutes and 36 seconds left in the game, Frey pulled up from well outside the 3-point line and nailed his sixth 3-pointer of the night. Everyone in Worthington Arena knew the shot was going in. It capped off an 11-4 personal run for Frey, extending the Bobcat lead from 7 to 14 points.
"I don't think there's a secret recipe for when I play good," said Frey. "I try and stay consistent regardless of playing good or bad. I just get in the gym, get up the reps. My teammates keep telling me 'keep shooting the ball when you're open.' I try to feed off that."
Frey's run led the Bobcats (8-11, 5-4) to a 59-point second half on their way to defeating Idaho State (7-11, 3-6) 104-84 on Saturday. The junior tied his career high with 31 points, with 21 coming in the second half.
In addition to his career scoring night, Frey effected the game in every way. He totaled five assists with no turnovers, helping the Bobcats take care of the ball and gain extra possessions on the Bengals. The Bobcats totaled 15 more shots and won the turnover battle by 12.
"Not unexpected," said Montana State head coach Brian Fish of Frey's ability to score. "(He's a) good player that can do that. But, his mental aspect of that game is way bigger than 31 points and 5 assists. He got us going. He got going down-hill, attacking the basket, making plays, getting it out of his hands, playing at a different pace."
Frey was far from the only player whose impact went beyond the box score.
Senior forward Sam Neumann subbed in early and made an immediate impact. Neumann totaled 12 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists. His energy could be felt on every possession.
"I don't want this to come off bad, but Sam played like Sam plays," said Fish. "He played well tonight, but when Sam takes charges, rolls to the basket, gets finishes, gets under the skin of other people, argues with me, all that stuff. That's when he's really good."
Frey and Neumann led the Bobcats in hustle plays on Saturday. The two veteran leaders were instrumental in the Bobcats halting their three-game losing streak.
The Bobcats next game is Saturday, Feb. 2, at 7 p.m. The team will host the first Brawl-of-the-Wild tilt of the season against the Grizzlies in Worthington Arena.
