Senior Amanda Jaynes provided the strongest performance of the day in the 400-meter hurdles. She placed fourth in the fourth heat of the event with a time of 58.33 seconds. Despite finishing outside of the top three of her heat and missing out on automatically advancing to the quarterfinals, Jaynes completed the ninth fastest time of all competitors to move into Friday's heats.
MSU senior thrower Calvin Root rose 19 spots in the individual standings between his first and second appearances at the NCAA West Preliminaries. Root, who placed 43rd as a junior in the hammer throw, finished 24th overall on Thursday with a throw of 202 feet, 4 inches (61.67m). Root sat in 10th through two of three heats and recorded the fourth best throw of his collegiate career.
