“We fought well and worked hard,” Reeves said. “Across the board things were looking really good, but it wasn’t easy. I’m just super happy for the team.”
Montana State freshman Enni Zander cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles to clinch a 4-3 decision for MSU over Eastern Washington on Friday evening in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center. The win snapped an eight match losing streak and gave MSU its first Big Sky victory since defeating Montana on March 4.
"It's a huge relief," said MSU head coach Jon Reeves. "We got on a run of matches where they just got away from us in that we missed a lot of opportunities. We had sets we were not closing out and matches we weren't closing out. It was a few points here or there. We're a team that can make things incredibly competitive and it was great to see our focus and our attention to the details."
Eastern Washington (7-11, 4-4) opened play taking the first point winning at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles.
The Eagles went up 2-0 with a straight set win at No. 4 singles, before Montana State (6-13, 3-6) rattled off three wins at the top of the ladder.
Senior Angelina Philippova started the streak with a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Zoey Nelson at No. 2 singles, followed by Laura Mary's 7-5, 6-1 win over Janaya Smith at the top spot. Freshman Annie Walker closed out the run with a three-set victory at No. 3 singles.
"We fought well and worked hard," Reeves said. "Across the board things were looking really good, but it wasn't easy. I'm just super happy for the team."
Eastern Washington closed out the scoring with a three-set win at No. 5 singles.
The Bobcats will host three-time defending Big Sky champion Idaho on Saturday at 10 a.m.
