Wearing bib No. 1, McCarthy opened with the fastest time in the first run with a clocking of 39:26. The junior from Edmonton, Alberta posted a second-run time of 42:01 for a combined 1:21.27. She finished just .09-seconds behind slalom champion Amelia Smart of Denver who posted a clocking of 1:21.18.

The Montana State women's alpine team put four racers in the top 10 of the slalom, including a third-place showing by Jocelyn McCarthy, to guide the Bobcats to a second-place team finish after the opening day of the 2018 Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association/NCAA West Regional Championships, Friday afternoon.
Wearing bib No. 1, McCarthy opened with the fastest time in the first run with a clocking of 39:26. The junior from Edmonton, Alberta posted a second-run time of 42:01 for a combined 1:21.27. She finished just .09-seconds behind slalom champion Amelia Smart of Denver who posted a clocking of 1:21.18.
Teammate Stephanie Gartner finished fifth-overall in 1:22.16, while Mia Henry, who posted her best performance of the season, placed ninth with a time of 1:223.40.
Bobcat All-American Benni Lyche notched an outstanding performance finishing tenth in 1:23.52. Kari Hole completed MSU's day with a 16th place showing in 1:25.48.
The MSU women's alpine squad totaled 85 points, second only to DU's 104 points.
MSU senior Garret Driller reached the slalom podium placing third-overall in a time of 1:26.29. The product of Tahoe, City, Calif., put together two solid runs, including a 42.01 second-run posting. New Mexico's Vegard Busengdal won the men's slalom title in 1:26.04.
Also scoring points for the Bobcats were Addison Dvoracek, 14th, 1:28.61, and Patrick Carry, 20th, 1:29.17.
Jeffrey Bell completed MSU's day finishing 33rd, while Morten Bakke did not finish his second run.
DU sits atop the team standings with 185 points. The Pioneers are followed by MSU 149, Colorado 148, New Mexico 134.5, Utah 89, Alaska-Anchorage 87.5, Westminster 79 and Colorado Mountain College 39.
The Nordic 5/10-km classic races will take place on Saturday.
