The first goal has already been achieved. Montana State's Ty Mogan will attempt to attain his second personal goal this Saturday. The Bobcat men's cross country runner is slated to participate in the NCAA Championships which begin at 10:45 a.m. MST in Madison, Wis.
"It's been a goal of his to qualify for the NCAA Championships," MSU head coach Lyle Weese said. "Ty has just continued to work and progress toward that. Qualifying for the national championships, a lot of times it's about the training and what you've done going into it, but then the last little bit is how much you really want it."
Mogan makes his first appearance on the national stage when the field of over 160 runners opens the 10-kilomer race at the University of Wisconsin's Zimmer Championship Course.
After a strong 2018 outdoor track and field season that was highlighted by Mogan's first individual all-conference honors, Mogan came into the 2018 cross country schedule two years removed from competing in the fall. He redshirted during the 2017 season after a strong sophomore campaign in 2016.
"The mindset was just knowing that the redshirt was to help me prepare for this year," Mogan said. "I think going through last year helped me know that I was ready to run at a higher level and pursue being an All-American. That's my number one goal before I'm done here."
Mogan has been impressive as a redshirt junior.
The Laurel, Mont., native was Montana State's top finisher in every meet this season. He previously ran on the NCAA's Zimmer course when the Bobcats competed at the Pre-National Invitational. Mogan placed 32nd with a time of 24:19.9 in the Men's 8k White Race while competing against some of the best in the nation on Oct. 13. That experience should benefit Mogan's appearance at the NCAA meet on Saturday.
"The first time an athlete competes at the national championships, the biggest thing is that they stay composed so that they can have their very best performance," Weese said. "They don't get distracted or treat the race differently than any other race. Once it starts, it's going to be feel like every other race start.
"Ty is just going to have to go out there and put up a great effort and do the things that he's done all year long."
Mogan nearly earned all-conference honors at the Big Sky Championships when he placed 12th overall by crossing the line in 24:15.0. He followed that performance up by taking 25th at the Mountain Region Championships. His finish and time of 29:57.4 was a career-best at the regional meet and qualified him for Saturday's NCAA Championships.
"Going in I had an actual plan," Mogan said. "The other races this season, I didn't really have a set game plan. But Lyle and I talked a lot and we planned for that race so that I could have a lot more at the end of the race, so I could get one of those last spots in the home stretch. I didn't really change a whole lot. I went into the race just loving the sport and this team. I just wanted to succeed as much for them."
Mogan will be MSU's latest runner at the NCAA Championships and first since 2014. Weese said his goal for Mogan would be to have him put his best race together and let the results fall as they may, which could hopefully propel him into a top-100 finish and in contention for a top-40 showing that would earn him All-America recognition.
While Mogan said his overall goal would be to help the Bobcats as a team qualify for the meet, he will take in the experience and use it to build off of.
"I have no experience at the national level, so I'm just going to go in to have fun," Mogan said. "If I do that, I should be set up to achieve more than expected."
Saturday marks the first time since 1978 that Wisconsin will host the national cross country meet when the school hosted the men's cross country championship at Yahara Hills Golf Course. In addition, the 2018 NCAA Cross Country Championship marks the first time since the 1998 NCAA Women's Golf Championship that the university has hosted a national championship in Madison. Live results for the meet are available on the msubobcats.com schedule, while a stream is available through a subscription on FloTrack.
