Montana State women's basketball fans will get their first opportunity to see the 2018-19 Bobcat squad in action as MSU hosts its annual Blue/Gold Scrimmage, Friday, Oct. 19 at 5:30 p.m. in Shroyer Gym.
The current Bobcat contingent will face its scout team in a regular four-quarter contest.
Tricia Binford, who is in her 14th season with the Bobcats, returns six letterwinners, including two starters from a team that posted a 16-15 overall mark and a 9-9 Big Sky Conference slate, last winter. In addition, two transfers that sat out the 2017-18 campaign will be eligible to play along with four freshmen.
After two weeks of full practice, Binford is ready to see how her squad will compete on Friday night.
"In terms of the scrimmage, the biggest thing is that we just want to get up and down the floor," Binford said. "We're not in game shape yet, but that's typical for my programs at this time of year. We want to get some things on film on both ends and get a lot of reps. We've been breaking things down quite heavily, so I think just an opportunity to get in uniform and run a little bit will be fun for the players."
Returning to the Bobcat starting line-up will be juniors Oliana Squires and Blaire Braxton. Squires averaged 10.2 points per game, while Braxton pulled down 4.9 rebounds per outing. In addition, Madeline Smith returns for her third season. The Snohomish, Wash., product averaged 10.2 points and a team-best 7.5 boards per game.
Binford will also rely heavily on returners Tori Martell, Ashley Van Sickle and Madisyn Shaide in the back court. Martell, a native of Somerset, Wis., came on strong at the end of last season averaging 8.4 points per game over the final eight contests. During that stretch, she also connected on 19 3-pointers. Van Sickle, who backed-up point guard Hannah Caudill, finished her first season playing in all 31 games, averaging 14.3 minutes per outing.
Claire Lundberg and Martha Kuderer sat out last season after transferring to the College Hill from Seton Hall. Lundberg, a product of Anoka, Minn., will have one season of eligibility remaining, while Kuderer will be a junior.
"I think the fans will see some immediate impacts by some new faces," Binford said. "Claire and Martha didn't get to be in uniform for us last year. They're going to be extremely noticeable (Friday night). Fans are also going to notice Tori and Oliana's progression from last season. And, I love the competition at the five right now. We're really looking forward to seeing the consistency there. The fans are also going to see some exciting freshmen in the program, too."
Montana State will host UM Western in exhibition play on Oct. 30, before opening the regular-season against Carroll College on Nov. 6.
