AURORA, Ore.. – Montana State's Kelly Hooper put together two consecutive solid rounds and is among the individual leaders after the opening day of the Rose City Collegiate at Langdon Farms Golf Club on Monday, Oct. 1. The Bobcat golf team is currently sixth in the standings with the final 18 holes set for Tuesday.
The Bobcats held a team lead through a majority of the opening 18 holes and finished the first round in second place with 294 strokes. That mark was the sixth lowest 18-hole round score as a team in program history.
MSU's second round of 307 put the Bobcats at a first-day total of 601. Three teams are within four strokes of the lead, with Boise State out front at 588. MSU narrowly trails Northern Colorado (597) and Eastern Washington (600), but is two strokes ahead of Seattle (603).
"I'm happy about our first round," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "We actually gave ourselves a chance and made some birdies, but we didn't the second round. We have to keep our heads high, even after a poor hole. We need to believe we can be a team able to shoot under 300."
Hooper is tied for second in the individual standings with Boise State's Nicole Suppelsa at 1-under 143. The MSU junior began the day by firing a 2-under-par 70 and followed it up with a team-best 73 in the second round of play. Courtney Vogel is atop the leaderboard at 139 strokes.
"Kelly is playing great and I'm super proud of her," Basye said. "Tomorrow we will tee it up and fight until the last putt drops."
Four Bobcats shot in the 70s during first round action. Coral Schulz shot a 73, Clare Dittemore carded a 75 and Hailey Oster carded a 76 to contribute to MSU's 294. Schulz is currently tied for 20th overall with a 151 (73-78). Dittemore is tied for 28th by registering rounds of 75 and 79 for a first-day 154.
Delaney Elliott bounced back from an opening round 80 by shooting a 77. She's tied for 40th at 157. Oster is one stroke behind Elliott and is tied for 48th with a 158.
The Bobcats finish play at the Rose City Collegiate on Tuesday. The final round is slated to begin at 8:30 a.m. MST at Langdon Farms Golf Club.
