Montana State cross country begins its 2017 slate at home then continues its campaign making treks throughout the western portion of the country, optimistically ending at the NCAA Championships, as Bobcats head coach Lyle Weese announced the men's and women's schedule for the upcoming season on Tuesday.
The Bobcats will host the 41st annual MSU-Bozeman Running Company Invitational at Bridger Creek Golf Course to open the season Saturday, Sept. 16. Montana State saw its largest contingent of Division I schools at least year's event which the Bobcats finished fourth and fifth on the men's and women's sides, respectively.
"It's exciting to get our season started with such a great meet with quality teams coming here to compete in Bozeman," cross country head coach Lyle Weese said. "It says a lot about our course and the way that we host home meets. It is a difficult way to start because it is our first meet of the year and there will be some outstanding teams in the field."
MSU will drive west to Missoula for the Montana Invitational on the University of Montana Golf Course on Sept. 29. The Bobcats follow that with a trip to California for the Bronco Invitational on Oct. 14 hosted by Santa Clara University.
The Bobcats head to the home of the conference office when MSU takes part in the Big Sky Cross Country Championships Oct. 28 in Ogden, Utah. The Big Sky meet will be hosted by Weber State. MSU comes off 2016 finishes of sixth and seventh, respectively, for the men's and women's teams.
"In cross country, you're always looking to improve the 1-5 split," Weese said. "We'll be looking for our pack of runners to move up towards our front-runners during the year to make that split as small as possible. The main reason we're going to Santa Clara is because it'll be a faster trip, so that way we go into the Big Sky Conference meet with more energy and confidence."
The MSU cross country squads are scheduled to compete in the NCAA Division I Mountain Region Championships, hosted by Utah State University, in Logan Utah. Both teams topped pre-meet expectations in 2016, but will look to advance to the final stage of competition. The NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships are set for Nov. 18 in Louisville, Ky., at Tom Sawyer State Park.
"It's a little different between the two teams," Weese said of the MSU cross country outlook. "There's a lot of unknowns on the women's team, including who'll be leading the pack. We have incredible depth on the women's side. We need to have a rising tide that is raising all ships and we need to improve together as a unit.
"On the men's side, we should have some outstanding front-runners in Diego Leon and Ty Mogan. The big key will be for the rest of the pack to come along and be able to complement our top runners."
