Cats slated for four games in four days in August
Four games in as many days highlights Montana State's men's basketball trip to Canada in August.
The Bobcats face the University of Calgary at 7 pm on August 10 and 12, and meet the University of Alberta on August 11 at 7 pm and August 13 at 1 pm, MSU coach Brian Fish said on Wednesday. All games are scheduled for the University of Calgary.
"This is the right time for us to take this trip," Fish said. "We made a trip to Canada when I was an assistant coach (at Creighton) and it was a great experience for the players and very valuable for our development as a team. When I approached Leon (Costello, MSU Director of Athletics) about this trip he was completely supportive, and we've had people step up to make this trip possible."
The Cats travel with a 13-man roster to Calgary, including mid-major All-American Tyler Hall and reigning Big Sky Conference Freshman of the Year Harald Frey. The Bobcats return five starters from last season's team which finished 16-16 overall, 11-7 in the Big Sky.
Incoming freshmen Lassi Nikkarinen (Helsinki, Finland), Isaac Bonton (Portland) and Luke Schultz (Fredericksburg, Texas) join a pair of 2016-17 redshirts – Konner Frey and Keljin Blevins – in giving the Bobcats what Fish considers an infusion of talent. "This is an opportunity for us to evaluate what we have and begin working together as a team," he said. "Getting everyone on the same page in terminology and understanding roles is a process, and this helps us in that."
Hall enters his junior year with 1,317 points, the highest two-season total ever by a Bobcat, while Frey recorded the second-most three-pointers (64) and third-most assists (96) by an MSU freshman. Devonte Klines sparked the Bobcats a season ago when joining the starting backcourt mid-season, while forwards Zach Green, a fourth-year starter, and Sam Neumann, whose 7.2 rebounds a game was the most among Big Sky players who return for the 2017-18 campaign, give the Bobcats a strong core of experienced players. Seniors Joe Mvuezolo and Benson Osayande, and freshman Devin Kirby, give the Cats frontcourt depth.
All four of MSU's August games in Canada will be broadcast by Jay Sanderson on select Bobcat Radio Network stations and on msubobcats.com.
