Christie Schiel became MSU's top runner in the 800 in school history while several other Bobcats etched their name in the program's record book
AZUSA, Calif. – A school record fell in consecutive days while several others joined the program record book as the Montana State men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up their third day in California competing in three meets on Friday, April 14.
Christie Schiel made history by taking over her second program record during her senior campaign. Schiel, already the school holder in the MSU women's indoor 800-meter run, crossed the line in the 800 at the Mt. SAC Relays in a time of 2 minutes, 7.89 seconds. That mark jumped her from second to first in the event in program history, passing Kaylee Schmitz's time of 2:08.00 she set just a season ago.
The performance was the seventh best of 55 runners in the 800 during the nationally-recognized meet and Schiel currently has the best time in the Big Sky Conference this season.
Senior Casey Teska and freshman Noah Martin also competed at the Mt. SAC Relays in Torrance Friday. Teska finished ninth in the women's pole vault by clearing 12-09.50 (3.90m) which was a season best. Martin tied for seventh in the high jump with a leap of 06-06.75 (2.00m).
The Bobcats had participants competing in the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa and the Beach Invitational in Long Beach.
Sophomore Sam Bloom joined the MSU Outdoor All-Time Top 10 list with his 1:52.04 finish in the men's 800 at the Bryan Clay Invite. Bloom placed 28th out 131 runners and moved to eighth in the event in program history.
Three throwers had big days at the Beach Invite.
Freshman Carley VonHeeder jumped to seventh in the program's javelin all-time rankings with her throw of 150-05 (45.84m). She took first in her flight and had the 11th best javelin throw of 36 competitors. Senior Jacqueline Verlanic improved her personal-best throw in the hammer by taking first in her flight with a mark of 183-07 (55.67m), while Callen Crawford moved to eighth in program history in the event with her toss of 180-08 (55.05m).
Senior Leslie Gappa (130-10) also threw in the javelin event and finished third in flight 3.
