Freshman Delaney Elliott fires a 2-under 70 for the best round of the tournament among MSU golfers
SEDONA, Ariz. – Montana State freshman Delaney Elliott completed a career-best round individually and the Bobcats' women's golf team wrapped up action Sunday, March 5, at the Red Rocks Invitational.
MSU finished 10th out of 13 teams at Oakcreek Country Club by shooting a team score of 315 Sunday, completing three rounds with a total of 926 (311-300-315). Host Northern Arizona placed third with 898 strokes over three days, while Seattle earned first due to a tiebreaker over Toledo with each finishing at 884.
Elliott turned in her best performance of the meet and one of MSU's best single-round efforts of the season Sunday.
The Superior, Colo., native fired a 2-under-par 70, her first collegiate round under par and just the fifth by a Bobcat this season. Elliott moved from a tie for 24th to tie for 11th in the individual standings with her score of 222.
Junior Jaylee Tait shot a 5-over 77 in the third round to lead MSU's scoring lineup during the tournament. She tied for eighth overall by firing a three-round 221. Senior Janelle Reali also shot a 77 Sunday to complete her appearance in Sedona at 11-over (227) and tied for 25th.
Freshman Kelly Hooper finished tied for 40th by shooting a two-day 235 (78-74-83), freshman Coral Schulz placed in a tie for 61st with 247 strokes (86-80-81) and sophomore Natassja Meredith shot an 80 Sunday for a total of 251 (85-86-80) to round out MSU's scoring lineup. Sophomore Clare Dittemore competed individually and wrapped up her appearance by finishing in a tie for 73rd (255).
"Delaney had a great finish today and Jaylee and Janelle stayed consistent for the team," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "We didn't play as well today and played above our average as a team. When we get into trouble we need to recover better, especially on a course like this. We have some things to work on this week before we get ready for GCU."
The Bobcats will make another appearance in Arizona for its next tournament. MSU is scheduled to play in the Grand Canyon Invitational in Phoenix beginning on Saturday, March 11.
