In front of a packed SUB ballroom the Montana State women's basketball team awaited its fate, Monday evening.
And, as the Oklahoma City Region was revealed, the No. 14 Bobcats found they were headed to No. 3 Washington for its first postseason appearance in 24 years.
Ironically, MSU will play the Huskies 24-years to the day of its last (and only) NCAA Tournament berth, Saturday night in Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle. Washington won that meeting 80-51.
Montana State (25-6, 15-3) will make its second ever NCAA appearance against Washington (27-5, 15-3 Pac-12). The 27 victories by the Huskies during the 2016-17 campaign is the second most in UW history. Under head coach Mike Neighbors, Washington advanced to the Final Four last winter. UW is currently ranked No. 12 in the AP poll and No. 11 in the USA Today Coaches poll.
The Huskies are led by espnW and Pac-12 Player of the Year Kelsey Plum- the nation's leading scorer. The Poway, Calif., product is averaging 31.7 points per game, while adding 4.7 assists and 5.1 rebounds. After scoring 57 points on her Senior Day against Utah, Plum became the No. 1 scorer in the history of collegiate women's basketball with 3,397 all-time points.
Montana State is coming off three straight wins to capture the Big Sky Conference Tournament title with a 62-56 win over Idaho State on Saturday afternoon. The win was MSU's seventh consecutive victory to close-out the Big Sky season.
Overall, the Bobcats' 25-wins are the most in school history. In addition, Montana State closed the year with 25 straight home victories- fourth best in the nation behind UConn (64), Bucknell (28) and UCLA (25).
The Bobcats are paced by senior Peyton Ferris, who was the preseason MVP pick, the regular-season Big Sky MVP and the Big Sky Tournament MVP. The Twin Bridges product is averaging 17.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per contest.
Also playing in Seattle on Saturday, beginning at 4:30 p.m. (MST), is No. 6 Oklahoma vs. No. 11 Gonzaga. MSU and Washington will tip approximately 30-minutes after the first game ends.
