BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Division I track and field season begins across the nation this week and Montana State will be included this year among teams taking advantage. MSU is set to host the Bobcat Preview on Saturday, Dec. 2, inside of Worthington Arena with the first event scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
Traditionally, the MSU track and field teams have hosted an intrasquad Blue-Gold meet as a precursor to their indoor slate. While the Bobcats hit the grind of their indoor slate in January, the Montana State men's and women's squads have an opportunity to compete against some different faces.
"The thing that's exciting about this meet is that we'll have guest competitors here in the Fieldhouse which I think adds a bigger challenge for our athletes," Montana State head coach Dale Kennedy said. "We'll learn a lot about our freshmen kids that we have had less time with. It's a great opportunity for us to get started and it gives us a chance to really take a look at what we've got done this fall."
Montana State welcomes MSU Billings and Carroll College's teams to Brick Breeden Fieldhouse this weekend, while several competitors from Montana will join the meet with the Griz split between Bozeman and Eastern Washington's Candy Cane X meet.
"I think having the competitive experience is hard to replicate in training sessions," Kennedy said. "You're going to see kids compete at a higher level when you're in a competition situation. This will give us a truer picture of where we really are. As we go home for Christmas break, hopefully this will be a motivator for our kids to continue to train and not take days or weeks off when they're away from campus."
The Bobcats head into their first meet of the season more than a month ahead of their next full team meet. MSU is set to hold seven meets in its home confines. Kennedy's squads will stay in Bozeman for a majority of the indoor schedule with its lone road meet taking place in Gillette, Wyoming, when MSU takes on Wyoming in the Powder River Dual on Jan. 27.
MSU uses its indoor schedule to gear up for the Big Sky Conference Indoor Championships. This year's conference meet takes place from Feb. 22-24 in Flagstaff, Ariz.
"Even though this isn't a time of year where we want to be at peak performance level, it will give us a start and checking point of where we are at the end of the fall training period," Kennedy said. "My guess is that with outside competition, we'll probably see higher-level performances than what we've seen from the Blue-Gold meets the past couple years."
