Tyler Hall leads balanced MSU attack
Montana State shot a season high 56% and grabbed 56 rebounds in Wednesday's 98-61 win over Bethesda in Worthington Arena, but the talk in the minutes after the game was about factors that don't show up on a box score.
"Energy is the thing with us," junior guard Devonte Klines said of his team's effort. "We're better when we're playing with energy."
Sophomore guard Harald Frey concurred. "I think we did a good job coming out with energy (in the second half), especially on the defensive end. That's what gets us going. I think we're an emotional team. We're better when we're playing with emotion, playing with passion, as Coach (Brian Fish) says."
Montana State built a 37-25 lead at halftime, but dispatched the Flames quickly thereafter. The Cats scored the first 17 points of the second stanza, built the lead to 30 moments later, and never led by less than 25 the rest of the way.
"In the second half the ball moved," Fish said. "We had 13 assists (in the second half) and we made simple plays. We dominated the boards, and I really like that. But what I really liked was when the ball touched three sides, good things happened."
Good things happening began with early, and from a distance. Klines opened the scoring with a triple a minute-and-a-half into the game, then Tyler Hall hit one 90 seconds later. Bethesda pulled to within 8-7 with 17:34 to play in the first half, but Hall's second trey and an Isaac Bonton and-one gave the Bobcats a cushion they'd never surrender.
Hall led all scorers with 20 points, while Klines, Bonton and Joe Mvuezolo each chipped in 11. Keljin Blevins scored 10. Mvuezolo snagged nine boards, and Harald Frey dished out seven assists.
Montana State's only home game in a span of 25 days, which Klines called "a good game for us," launches a two-game road trip that begins on Saturday. The Cats play at Milwaukee at 2 pm MT/3 pm CT.
