The Montana State cross country team announced its award winners following the 2017 season.
The Bobcats' Top Gun award winners – given to the runners that had the best overall success on their respective teams – were junior Kelsi Lasota for the women's squad and freshman Brandon Hough on the men's side.
Lasota was Montana State's top finisher in three of five meets this fall. She placed among the top 10 women's competitors in her first four races of the season, including a fourth-place showing at the Big Sky Conference Championship in Ogden on Oct. 28. Her finish at the conference meet was the highest by a Bobcat runner since Heather Demorest earned runner-up at the 2013 championship.
She completed the cross country season by taking 58th overall, and second in the MSU lineup, at the Mountain Region Championship.
Hough wrapped up the season by finishing as the Bobcats' top placing runner in MSU's final four meets of the year. His highest showing came in a runner-up finish at the Montana Invitational on Sept. 29. Hough eventually placed 13th overall at the Big Sky Championships. He was the second fastest freshman in the men's meet and earned the best overall finish for a Bobcat since 2014 when Jake Turner took seventh.
He completed the cross country slate with a 36th place finish at the Mountain Region Championship.
Sophomore Cameron Carroll was the men's recipient of the Most Improved award. Carroll opened the season by winning the men's 8-kilometer race at the MSU-Bozeman Running Co. Invitational on Sept. 16. He eventually finished third in the MSU lineup on two occasions, including at the Big Sky Championship, and fourth once.
Lasota was the women's team's selection for the Most Improved award.
The Bobcats also recognized their letterwinners for the 2017 cross country season. Collin Buck, Riley Collins, Anthony Schmalz, along with Carroll and Hough, earned letters during the fall schedule on the men's team. Lasota, Trisha Carlson, Caroline Hardin and Samantha Kelderman received letters on the women's team.
