Montana State senior Hannah Caudill matched a career-high 24 points, including a six-of-nine effort from long distance to lift the Bobcats to a 62-51 victory over Long Beach State, Sunday afternoon at the Walter Pyramid.
Montana State (1-1) held a slim 21-20 advantage following a turnover-plagued first half.
The Bobcats pushed its lead to 40-33 on a Caudill 3-pointer with 49-seconds remaining in the third frame and held a six-point margin heading into the final quarter.
Long Beach State (0-2) took a 47-45 lead with 5:07 left on a Shanaijah Davison triple, but Bobcat freshman Laura Pranger quickly evened the score and MSU took a 50-47 advantage on another Caudill 3-pointer with 2:52 remaining. The 49ers again tied the contest at 51-all, but a pair of Oliana Squires free throws at the 1:22 mark put MSU ahead for good as Caudill converted six-of-six from the line in the last minute to secure the Bobcat victory.
"It's nice to get a split on the road and I'm proud of the way we responded from the loss to USC," said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. "We turned the page and had immediate improvement defensively with our urgency and focus. Obviously, we need to do a better job taking care of the ball, but I thought we settled in the second half and Hannah stepped-up and took over for us down the stretch. I was also very happy with the way Madeline (Smith) and Blaire (Braxton) handled things in the post throughout the game."
Smith, a 6-2 forward from Snohomish, Wash., reached double-figures for the second straight game with 11 points. She also added six rebounds, two steals and an assist. Braxton, a product of Highlands Ranch, Colo., finished with a game-high 10 rebounds, while dishing out a career-high five assists.
The Bobcats, who shot 43.5 percent from the field in the second half, held Long Beach to 32 percent from the floor and 21 percent from long distance. MSU also held a 42-36 advantage under the boards.
The 49ers were led by Davison with 20 points and six steals.
MSU will host Providence (MT) on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Worthington Arena.
