Montana State junior Tyler Hall, the fourth-leading returning scorer in college basketball, joined the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame's 2018 Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award Watch List.
Hall averaged 23.1 points a game as a sophomore last season, seventh nationally, and with 1,317 career points he is one of just four rising juniors with more than 1,200 career points. Hall was recently named the Big Sky Conference's 2018 Preseason MVP.
Montana State coach Brian Fish said Hall's honor is a positive indicator for the entire program. "Tyler has worked very hard and he's earned these honors with his performance," Fish said, "but I also know that this is recognition for the entire team. For one player to succeed everyone has to do their job. That's what we're working for, and I know that Tyler would trade all the individual honors for wins. That's what he's about, and that's what we emphasize in our program."
Hall joins some of the nation's premiere players on the list. Several organizations have tabbed Michigan State's Miles Bridges, a Julius Erving Award candidate, as preseason player of the year in Division I, and Oregon's Troy Brown and Kevin Knox of Kentucky are each considered among the top freshmen in the nation.
The Rock Island, Illinois product – who says Julius Erving is his father's favorite player – credited his teammates and coaches for inclusion on the prestigious list. "We got hard in practice, we challenge each other every day, so it's great recognition for the team," Hall said. "We have a lot of expectations we want to live up to."
The award honors former University of Massachusetts star Julius Erving, who averaged 26.3 points and 20.2 rebounds a game for the Minutemen before a legendary professional career. Starring in both the ABA and NBA, Erving is a 1993 inductee into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Previous award winners include Josh Hart of Villanova (2017), Denzel Valentine of Michigan State (2016), and Arizona's Stanley Johnson (2015). Find more information at www.HoophallAwards.com.
