Junior Kaylee Schmitz soared to a first place finish in the 800, breaking the school record with an altitude adjusted time of 2:08.44. The previous record was help by Christine Otte, who set a record of 2:08.50 in 1998.
"What a great night," head coach Dale Kennedy said. "Kaylee Schmitz had a incredible performance tonight and finally broke that record. Our sprinters really had a good night, but overall the team looked strong. There were so many lifetime and season's bests, which will give us some momentum going into next week."
Montana State's sprinters had a successful evening, winning three-of-four events and earning seven top three finishes. Daryan Box won the 60 with a lifetime-best time of 7.84, while taking second in the 200 (25.57). Box finished behind teammate Amanda Jaynes who also ran a life-time best of 25.50 in the event. Josephine Petruska and Elisabeth Krieger went two-three in the 400, clocking times of 57.59 and 58.33. Jessica Chrisp and Danielle Rider finished first and third in the 60 hurdles, both earning career-high's. Chrisp finished in 8.80 and Rider ran the race in 8.94.
Christie Schiel, Taylor Buschy and Kendra Larson finished in spots three, four and five in the 800. Schiel ran across the finish line in 2:15.36, Buschy in 2:16.01 and Larson clocked a time of 2:16.52. Buschy earned a season-best mark and Larson's time was her career-fastest. Freshman Alyssa Snyder ran the mile in 5:00.05 to place second, just short of the conference qualifier. Layne Oliver finished behind her in third, with a season-best 5:07.98. Rachel Atwood led all runners in the 3000, clocking a time of 10:28.22.
Chrisp also placed third in the high jump, clearing a height of 5-03.75. Former Bobcat, Amber Amsbaugh won the high jump with a clearance of 5-07.00, competing unattached. Amsbaugh ranks third all-time in MSU history in the event indoor and sixth outdoors.
Casey Teska remains unmatched in the pole vault, clearing a height of 12-05.20 to win the event. Carter Theade's 11-11.75 was a season-best and good enough for a second place finish.
In three-of-four events Chrisp competed in tonight, she placed in the top three. The junior earned another career-best in the long jump, placing second with a mark of 18-03.75. Rider finished sixth with a jump of 17-04.75. Rider also placed third in the shot put, throwing 42-05.50.
Jacqueline Verlanic placed second in the weight throw with a distance of 53-08.25, while Callen Crawford (53-00.00) and Brittnee Grimstad (52-02.75) placed fourth and fifth.
Mitchell Horning continues to crawl up the ranking the 60, running a career-best 6.94. Horning also came out on top in the 200, finishing in 22.02, another personal-best. Christopher Lange's 50.24 second 200 won him the race as well.
Diego Leon and Shawn Peden placed second and third in the 800, marking times of 1:58.52 and 1:58.70. Jake Purlee finished fifth with a time of 1:58.80, while Oliver Kitzerow (1:58.94) and Zachary Kughn (1:59.40) finished sixth and seventh. Leon won the mile with his best mark this season of 4:16.01. Kughn finished close behind, clocking a 4:18.65 mile.
Holding on to well fought race, Justice Lamer won the 3000 in 8:46.03. Mason Storm placed third in the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.51 and Lange placed fifth, crossing the finish line in 8.76.
Austin Decker cleared the bar at 15-00.00 in the pole vault, placing second behind Easton Patton, who competed unattached. Alexander Lewis jumped 21-08.00 in the long jump to finish second and Trevor Simanski placed fourth with a jump of 21-03.25.
Kyle Douglass remains unbeaten in the shot put, throwing 55-00.00 feet. Zach Sharp earned another career-high this evening, throwing 60-01.75. Calvin Root placed behind Sharp in second, marking a distance of 57-06.25.
"Mason (Storm), Danielle (Rider) and Jessica (Chrisp) look like they're ready to get us off to a strong start with the multi's on Thursday. They all competed very well tonight and should give us a spark on the first day of the championships. We're looking forward to hosting and can hopefully take advantage of competing on our home track."
Montana State hosts the 2016 Big Sky Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships beginning Thursday, February 25.
