Bobcat junior averaged 17 points a game after move to bench
Marcus Colbert's move out of the Montana State starting lineup at the end of January was met not with protest or indignation, but with a willingness to do whatever was needed to help the team. The junior guard was rewarded Monday when the Big Sky Conference named him its Reserve of the Year.
Averaging 11.9 points a game at the time of the move, Colbert's offensive contribution not only shifted but increased. "Marcus took on more responsibility offensively," Bobcat coach Brian Fish said, and the numbers bear that out. Colbert was also among the Big Sky's leaders in assists at the time of his status change, but the season's final nine games altered that, as well. He averaged just a tick under five assists a game for the season's first 20 contests, but that figure dropped to 3.2 a game thereafter.
The Post Falls, Idaho, product closes his junior season at MSU on the cusp of entering the Bobcat record book. He is four assists from knocking Hall of Famer Jason Erickson out of the 10th spot on MSU's career list, is 15 three-pointers from supplanting Alonzo Stephens on that chart, and is 152 points from joining the 1,000-point club.
Colbert started 21 of MSU's 30 games this season, but qualified for the reserve award by coming off the bench in more than half of the Bobcats' conference games. He headlines a group of key players that return in 2015-16. Junior forward Danny Robison, sophomore guard Stephan Holm and Colbert join freshman starters Zach Green and Joey Frenchwood and a host of other reserves as anchors of next year's Bobcat squad.
