BOZEMAN - The Montana State track and field team added two new records to the wall in the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse on Friday evening to top off a successful night. The men's distance medley relay surpassed the old record set in 2013 by almost three seconds. Matthew Tex, Rory Bauer, Jory Fisher and Cristian Soratos recorded a 9:55.77 relay time. Heather Demorest notched a record-breaking performance, passing the 5,000 meter time by .01 seconds, with a time of 17:17.25.
"Some bright spots to take out of the evening are obviously Heather's 5000 meter performance and the men's distance medley relay," head coach Dale Kennedy said. "Our 5000 meter on the women's side shows the depth we have in our distance crew with several of them qualifying for conference. For the men to beat the record racing just themselves and the clock was very impressive."
For the fourth week in a row, Sean Ferriter cruised his way to a first place finish, throwing 65-03.25 feet in the weight throw. Ryan Kropp earned a personal best in the pole vault, vaulting 16-04.75, good enough for first place and a trip to the championships. Rounding out the field events, Jake Mushaben jumped 22-11.75 in the long jump.
In addition to Demorest's 5,000m record, the Bobcat's finished one through five in the event, with Keely West, Caroline Hardin and Michelle Cline all qualifying for the conference championships. On the men's side, Jake Turner led the pack, with a time of 15:06.21. Not far behind him was teammate Seth Garbett (15:08.04) who also made it to the BSC championships.
Josephine Petruska and Iris Hardarson went one-two in the 400, both qualifying for conference with times of 56.53 and 57.29. The men's 4x400 relay was narrowly edged by Montana, but managed to earn a qualifying time of 3:19.60.
"There were a lot of individual performances that should be noted. Sean Ferriter continues to be consistent for us and Ryan Kropp keeps showing improvements. I'm hoping we can get a few athletes back next week who have been sick in order to get back on track for the remainder of the season."
The Bobcats return home next Friday to host Montana and Weber State in another double-dual match up in the Brick.
