BOZEMAN – The Montana State Track and Field teams earned a clean sweep over Montana and Weber State in their final home dual of the season. The men were victorious 80-64 over WSU and 83-65 over UM, while the women soared past WSU 88-55 and UM 91-56.
"Overall, we are continuing to improve," head coach Dale Kennedy said. "Everyone is getting better and showing higher marks every week. That's exactly what we like to seem at this point in the season."
Chantel Jaeger highlighted the evening, breaking the fieldhouse record, running a 24.20 200m. Jaeger also crossed the finish line first in the 400 with a time of 54.36.
Just as he has all season, Sean Ferriter dominated the weight throw, with a distance of 62-02.25 feet, almost five feet past his closest competitor. Zach Sharp hit a Big Sky Conference Standard with a mark of 57-09.00 in the event.
MSU's jumpers on the men's side took five of the top spots, three in the triple jump and two in the long jump. Kevin Close jumped 47-01.00 to lead, while Trevor Simanski (46.04.75) and Alexander Lewis (46-03.25) followed closely in the triple jump. Lewis and Jake Muchaben went one-two in the long jump, with jumps of 23-02.50 and 22-10.50 feet.
Ryan Kropp and Austin Decker led the field of pole vaulters, vaulting 16-00.75 and 15-09.00, both automatic conference qualifiers.
In a tight 60m dash, Michael Tobin was narrowly edged out by .01 seconds (WSU-Tony Osheku Jr.) with a time of 6.99. Mitchell Horning trailed Tobin's heals, finishing third in 7.00 seconds. Jory Fisher soared through his final lap in the 800, finishing with a time of 1:55.85 to take first place. Eric Zechenelly was added to the Big Sky automatic qualifying list, running a 49.64 400.
Carley McCuthen added two more first place victories to her resume, finishing the 60m hurdles in 8.58 seconds and jumping 18-07.75 feet in the long jump. Although no female throwers hit BSC standards, Kristi VandeBergh, Alexandra Rowland and Danielle Muri showed great improvements, finishing the event second, third and fourth.
The women's 800 was won by Kaylee Schmitz (2:13.69), who was followed by Lierin Flanagan (2:14.46). Taylor Buschy added a qualifying time in the event with a time of 2:15.24. Jaeger ran a career-best 24.20 second 200, in front of teammate Josephine Petruska, who finished in 25.24.
The 'Cats distance crew filled the voided for the season's top runners, who will be competing in Seattle tomorrow. Rachel Sullivan and Keely finished first and second in the 3000 with times of 10:22.37 and 10:25.37, while Trevor Polson (8:32.38) and Seth Garbett (8:46.71) went one-two for the men. Sullivan and Polson both hit qualifying times.
"We need to stay healthy and tune up a few times before next weekend to hopefully add a few more competitors to the conference championships roster. We're headed in the right direction as we get to the end of the season."
Heather Demorest, Cristian Soratos and Matthew Tex will be competing in Seattle at the Washington Husky Classis tomorrow afternoon. The team remains as home for its final regular season meet that will take place next Friday, February 20.
