MSU faces second of four straight Mountain West opponents
Brian Fish knows there is a wide range of possibilities when his team makes its Worthington Arena debut Friday night against a talented and athletic San Jose State team Friday night.
"It's the first home game of the year," Montana State's second-year head coach said in advance of his squad hosting the Mountain West entry on at 8 pm Friday as the second half of a men's/women's doubleheader. "I've seen teams come out in the first home game of the year and play great, and I've seen teams lay an egg."
The Cats head into Friday's home opener with a 1-2 mark after losses at Hawai'i and to SJSU league-mate Nevada in Honolulu last weekend. The Spartans, meanwhile, lost to Idaho of the Big Sky 74-54 before beating Montana 64-61 on Monday. Fish said he expects a team similar to MSU's previous Mountain West opponent.
"They're athletic, a lot like Nevada," he said. "They'll throw it up on the glass and they're really good at going and getting it and putting it back. They want to score in transition, they want to get it and go."
Guard Gary Williams, Jr., the team's smallest starter at 6-5, paces the Spartans with 11.5 points and 5.0 boards a game. Frank Rogers, a 6-9 senior forward, scores 10.0 points with 7.0 rebounds a game. San Jose State shoots 33% from the floor and 22% from deep on the season, but Fish said it is a team that seems to have figured out its offensive identity.
"They shot 29 threes in the game they lost," he said, "and 17 in the game they won. I think they're figuring things out."
The Bobcats are in that process, as well, having survived three games in about 45 hours last weekend in Hawai'i. MSU shot exactly 50% in the first two games of the weekend – a loss to Hawai'i, followed by a win over UH-Hilo – before dipping to 30% against Nevada in the finale. The backcourt duo of Marcus Colbert (12.7 points a game) and Tyler Hall (11.0) complemented the efficient play of forward Danny Robison. The Billings native scored 11.0 points a game, shooting 57% from the floor, 5-for-7 from the arc, and 86% from the line with the most attempts on the team.
After Friday's game, the Bobcats head to Billings for another contest against a Mountain West team, Wyoming, on Sunday afternoon. Tipoff is 2:05 pm in Rimrock Auto Arena.
