“We really came out well and you couldn’t ask for anything more,” MSU Head Coach Tricia Binford said. “We hit the open shot and did a great job under the boards.”
Montana State junior Jasmine Hommes recorded a game-high 20 points and Jackie Elliott pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds to lift the Bobcats to a 62-54 win over Weber State, Saturday afternoon in Worthington Arena.
The win snapped MSU's four-game losing streak and was the 16th straight over the Wildcats.
Montana State (7-8, 1-3) played a near perfect first half, jumping out to a 28-10 advantage at the 5:33 mark following a Delany Junkermier three-pointer. Weber State (5-10, 0-4) closed the margin to 37-23 at intermission.
"We really came out well and you couldn't ask for anything more," MSU Head Coach Tricia Binford said. "We hit the open shot and did a great job under the boards."
Weber State turned the table on the Bobcats with an 11-0 run coming out of halftime to trail by just three points. The Wildcats whittled the lead down to 43-42 with 12:36 left on a Jalen Carpenter jumper, but MSU got a three-point play by Hommes to give them a four-point cushion and an advantage they wouldn't relinquish down the stretch.
"We knew Weber was a good second half team and that's something we talked about at halftime," Binford said. "When they made their run, you could start seeing some doubt and what-ifs, so we called timeout, challenged them and told them they were in control of their actions. We can't have those spells coming out of halftime. We have to be ready to go.
"I thought Ausha (Cole) came in and got our composure back," Binford said. "She was ready to go and did a nice job on the defensive end, as well."
Hommes finished the game connecting on eight-of-15 from the field. Also in double-figures for the Bobcats were Junkermier and Kalli Durham with 10 points, apiece. MSU shot 44 percent from the field and a much-improved 77 percent from the free throw line.
Montana State held a sizeable margin under the boards, out-rebounding Weber State 44-27. Aside from Elliott, junior Alexa Dawkins pulled down eight rebounds for her best total in almost two months. Lindsay Stockton finished with six rebounds and four assists.
Weber State, who shot 40 percent from the field, was led by Regina Okoye with 18 points.
MSU will travel to Montana next Saturday afternoon.
